STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
REMOVAL
1. Remove the side panel and lower panel.
2. Remove in the order indicated in the illustration, noting the following steps.
CAUTION: Do not try to remove the steering wheel by hitting the shaft with a hammer. The column will collapse.
3. Steering Wheel
a. Set the vehicle in the straight-ahead position.
b. Remove the steering wheel by using a suitable pull
4. Steering Lock
a. Use a chisel and a hammer to make a groove in the heads of the steering lock mounting bolts.
b. Remove the bolts by using a screwdriver.
c. Remove the steering lock component.
INSTALLATION
1. Install in the reverse order of removal indicated in the illustration, noting the following steps.
2. Steering Lock
a. Install the steering lock component on the jacket.
b. Verify that the lock operates correctly.
c. Install new steering lock mounting bolts.
d. Tighten the bolts until the heads break off.
CAUTION: Do not apply shock in the axial direction of the shaft. The column will collapse.
3. Steering Shaft Component and Universal Joint
a. Tighten bolts A, B and C.
b. Tighten bolt D with the steering shaft at its upper most tilt Position.
c. The paint must be visible after tightening bolt D.
d. After installation, lightly tap the lower bracket at the E point shown by using a hammer to verify correct installation.
4. Steering Wheel
a. Before installing the steering wheel, adjust the clock spring.
b. Install the steering wheel with the vehicle in the straight-ahead position.
