Subject:
MIL ILLUMINATION WITH DTC P0300 THROUGH P0304

APPLICABLE MODELS
1997 Protege with Z5 engine and a VIN of JM1BC141*V0199999 and lower.

DESCRIPTION
The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate and Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0300 through P0304 may also be stored in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) continuous memory. The Freeze Frame Data (FFD) recorded at the time of MIL illumination is in the vicinity of: "Vehicle Speed: 80 MPH, Engine RPM: 3400, Load: 66 - 76%.
During the above conditions, although the engine is operating normally, the PCM logic mistakenly judges the engine condition as misfiring and stores the DTC in memory. To prevent this concern, the PCM logic has changed.
Customers complaining of this concern should have the vehicle inspected and if necessary, repaired according to this bulletin.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify concern and the above FFD (Freeze Frame Data) (Vehicle Speed: 80 MPH, Engine RPM: 3400, Load: 66 - 76%).
^ If the above conditions are recorded, replace the PCM with a new part.
^ If the above conditions are not found, refer to the workshop (DTC P0300 through P0304).

NOTE:
If none of the above conditions are found, contact the Technical Hotline prior to replacing the PCM.

2. Verify repair.
