Renotification of Recall # 77810 1998 626 w/FMS Audio - Rear Speaker
Dear Mazda Dealer:
Mazda Motor Corporation has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 1998 Mazda 626 vehicles with the FMS audio system.
Mazda has determined that on some 1998 626 models, extreme humidity may cause condensation to form on an air duct under the dash when the air conditioning is in use. Prolonged use under these conditions may cause moisture to drip into the audio unit, resulting in a short circuit. If a short circuit in the radio occurs, 12-volt direct current goes to the right rear speaker with the potential of causing a fire.
A renotification letter will be mailed to owners of subject vehicles that have not completed this recall, on June 5, 2000. Owners will be asked to return their vehicle to a Mazda dealer for inspection and installation of a protective strip that prevents moisture from entering the audio unit. Detailed information regarding this recall is provided in Attachment I and the repair procedure is located in Attachment II. Both the renotification letter and the original letter sent to the owners of the subject vehicles are provided in Attachment III.
The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act prohibits selling or leasing any subject vehicles without performing the necessary repair for defects or failures. Therefore, please complete the necessary work for all vehicles in your inventory prior to sale or lease.
Please make certain that the appropriate personnel in your dealership are familiar with the details of this recall for responding to customer inquiries. Should you have any questions, please contact the Warranty Hotline.
We apologize for any inconvenience this program may cause you and your personnel. Your understanding and support in carrying out this recall is greatly appreciated.
