Attachment I
CONDITION OF CONCERNMazda has determined that on some 1998 626 2.0L models, the timing belt tensioner and tensioner spring may wear at the point of contact causing the spring to detach from the tensioner. If the spring breaks causing a lack of belt tension and belt slippage, the vehicle may stall which could lead to a potential loss of control.
Two different suppliers produced tensioners for the 1998 four-cylinder FS engine. Only tensioners produced by Koyo require replacement. Please see Attachment II for detailed inspection procedures.
