EXCESSIVE IDLE VIBRATION OR A/T ENGAGEMENT SHOCK
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
All 1998 626 vehicles with FS engine and LA4A-EL automatic transmission.
DESCRIPTION
Excessive idle vibration or shift shock during engagement into drive or reverse. This may be caused by improperly aligned engine mounts.
Customers complaining of this concern should have their vehicle repaired according to the following procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Verify customer complaint.
2. Raise vehicle on hoist and loosen all nuts and bolts of the # 2 and # 5 engine mounts, including the through bolts.
3. Lower the vehicle.
4. Disconnect and remove the battery, battery tray, air cleaner, inlet tube, and cruise control servo mounting bolts. Move the cruise control servo aside to gain access to the # 4 engine mount bolts.
5. Remove the fuel filter bracket mounting bolts and move the fuel filter and bracket aside to gain access to the # 4 engine mount.
Note
^ Do not remove the fuel lines.
6. Loosen the through bolts of # 3 and # 4 engine mounts and loosen all remaining nuts and bolts on these engine mounts.
7. Temporarily reinstall the battery and connect the battery cables.
8. Temporarily reinstall the ground strap to the # 3 engine mount.
9. Start the engine with the brake applied.
Note
^ Do not allow the vehicle to move.
10. Shift from neutral to reverse two times, then shift from neutral to drive two times, and finally, shift from neutral to reverse two additional times.
11. Leave the vehicle in neutral, turn off the ignition, and set the parking brake.
12. Remove the battery and disconnect the ground strap from the # 3 engine mount.
13. Tighten the # 4 engine mount beginning at the left inner bolt # 1. Then tighten bolts # 2, # 3, and # 4 in a clockwise order.
14. Tighten the # 4 engine mount through bolt. Inspect the # 4 bolt head location, It should be close to the center of the slotted hole after tightening.
15. Tighten the # 3 engine mount nuts and bolts.
Note
^ Make sure the ground strap is properly connected.
16. Tighten the # 3 engine mount through bolt.
17. Install all parts in the reverse order of removal and reconnect the battery.
18. Raise the vehicle on the hoist and tighten the # 2 engine mount through bolt and the # 5 engine mount bolts on the engine side only.
19. Tighten all remaining nuts and bolts on # 2 and # 5 engine mounts.
20. Check for DTC codes that may have been inadvertently set during the procedure and clear them.
21. Verify the # 4 engine mount remains properly centered as shown.
22. Verify repair.
