Removal/Installation

1. Deactivate audio anti-theft function, as outlined under Technician Safety Information, before disconnecting battery.
2. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined in Technician Safety Information.
3. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain engine coolant.
4. Remove timing belt.
5. Remove cylinder head cover.
6. Remove camshaft as outlined in Camshaft.
7. Temporarily install righthand engine mount bracket to support engine, and remove special engine support tool.
8. Remove cylinder head bolts in two or three steps, Fig. 5 and 6, then remove head.

9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply clean engine oil to new O-rings and install in oil control plugs.
b. Turn crankshaft clockwise and apply engine oil to cylinder walls.
c. Head gaskets are not interchangeable; ensure gasket identifying mark faces up.
d. Measure head bolts and replace any that are longer than 5.315 inches.
e. Apply clean engine oil to head bolt threads and seat faces, then install with washers.
f. Tighten head bolts to specifications in two or three steps in sequence shown in, Fig. 7.

g. Torque cylinder head bolts to 17 - 19.1 ft.lbs (23.1 - 25.9 Nm).
h. Paint mark on each bolt, then using mark as reference, tighten each bolt 85 - 95° in order shown, then tighten each bolt another 85 - 95°.
i. Reactivate audio anti-theft function as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
