APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
All 1995-98 Millenia with VINs lower than JM1 TA222* W1415078.

DESCRIPTION

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) leak at the oil pan and the transaxle case due to insufficient oil pan sealant. If a large quantity of ATF leaks from the transaxle some vehicles may experience abnormal shifting and/or shift shock due to low line pressure. To resolve these concerns, the sealant has been changed.

Customers complaining of this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify customer complaint.

2. Remove the oil pan per the Workshop Manual section K (05).

3. Remove the old sealant that is stuck to the contact surface between the oil pan and the transaxle case with a suitable tool.

Caution
^ Be careful not to scratch the oil pan contact surface.

4. Clean the surface with a spray type cleaner and a lint-free cloth to remove all grease/oil. Repeat as necessary.

5. Inspect the oil pan for warpage by placing the oil pan upside down on a flat surface and using a 0.45 mm feeler gauge.

6. Apply a continuous 3-5 mm {0.12-0.19 in} bead of sealant along the contact surface and around the bolt holes as shown.

Caution
^ Applying more sealant than recommended, may cause sealant to spill over into the oil pan.

7. Align and place the pan gasket in position.

8. Apply sealant to the oil pan gasket in the same way as Step 6.

9. Install oil pan and tighten new bolts gradually and evenly.

Tightening torque
6.9 - 8.8 Nm (70-90 kgf-cm, 61-78 in-lb.)

10. Verify repair.
