Cruise Control: Description and Operation

Cruise Control System Description
- The fail-safe function is provided in cruise control system.

Fail-safe function
- If the brake switch or circuit in the cruise actuator cannot be properly maintained, the fail-safe function stops system control.

Components And Function:

Components and function

Operation

1. The cruise control module sends signals to the stepping motor housed in the cruise actuator. The stepping motor moves the accelerator pedal by means of the internal geartrain, electromagnetic coupling and actuator cable. The vehicle speed sensor sends the reference signal that the control module and compares it to the set speed. If a discrepancy exists, the control module actuates the stepping motor to adjust the accelerator pedal and maintain a constant vehicle speed. When accelerating, the accelerator pedal is moved as shown in the figure.
2. When any of switches operated by the brake, clutch or selector lever, the control module cancels the cruise control.

Operating condition
- When the following conditions are satisfied, the cruise control system operates:
1. The ignition switch is turned and left at ON position (IG1 ON).
2. The cruise control switch is turned on (CRUISE MAIN ON).
3. The brake pedal is not depressed. (normally open switch OFF, normally closed switch ON)
4. The clutch pedal is not depressed. (clutch switch OFF) (MTX)
5. The selector lever is in any gear (except at N or P). Transaxle range switch OFF) (ATX)
6. The speed of the vehicle is 40 km/h {25 mph} or more.

- If any of the following conditions are satisfied while the cruise control system is in operation, the cruise actuator memorizes the set speed, then cancels the cruise control system (indicator is OFF). If the resume switch is pressed, the vehicle and resumes the set speed:
1. The brake pedal is depressed. (normally open switch ON, normally closed switch OFF)
2. The clutch pedal is depressed. (clutch switch ON) (MTX)
3. Set the selector lever to N range. (transaxle range switch ON) (ATX)
4. When the vehicle speed is 15 km/h {9.3 mph} slower than the set speed.
5. When sudden change in vehicle speed causes abnormal fluctuation. The control module in the cruise actuator calculates the fluctuation from vehicle speed.

- If the vehicle speed reaches 11.2 km/h {6.9 mph} or more faster than the set speed the cruise actuator memorizes the set speed and cancels the operation (indicator remains ON). Then the vehicle speed drops to 9.6 km/h {6.0 mph} or more than the set speed, the vehicle automatically resumes the set speed.

Set speed cancel condition
- When at least one of the following conditions is satisfied, the cruise control system operation is released:
1. The cruise control switch is turned off (CRUISE MAIN OFF).
2. The ignition switch is turned to LOCK or ACC position.
3. When the cruise actuator cannot be properly maintained.
4. When the cruise control system cannot be properly maintained.
