Automatic Transaxle Removal and Installation

AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [LA4A-EL]

Note The oil pan could contain small chips, shavings, and other particles helpful in checking the condition of the transaxle and diagnosing certain problems. To ensure that all foreign particles stay in the oil pan, make sure that the transaxle is never tipped completely over while the oil pan is still installed.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain the ATF into a container.
3. Remove the battery component.
4. Remove the fresh-air duct, air cleaner component.
5. Remove the front wheel and tire.
6. Remove the splash shield.
7. Remove in the order indicated in the table.
8. After removal, remove the oil pan to check the condition of the transaxle.
9. Install in the reverse order of removal.
10. Install the splash shield.
11. Install the wheel and tire.
12. Install the fresh-air duct, air cleaner component.
13. Install the battery component.
14. Fill the transaxle with the specified ATF after installation.
15. Inspect for leakage of ATF from all connecting points.
16. Connect the negative battery cable.
17. Inspect the operation of the transaxle range switch.
18. Inspect the operation of the selector lever.





19. Carry out the mechanical system test.
20. Carry out the road test.

No.4 Engine Mount Removal Note

Caution To prevent damage to the body, insert a rag into the gap between the fender and body, when installing the SST.





1. Support the engine by using the SST before removing the engine mounting member.
2. Remove the No.4 engine mount.

Tie-Rod End Removal Note

Caution The sharp edges of the SST can slice the tie-rod end dust boot. Install the SST so that the sharp edges are between the dust boot and the tie rod.

1. Remove the cotter pin and nut.





2. Disconnect the tie rod end from the knuckle by using the SST.

Lower Arm Removal Note





1. Remove the clinch bolt from the lower arm ball joint.

Caution Wrap a rag around the ball joint dust boot to protect it from damage.





2. Pry the lower arm out of the knuckle.

Drive Shaft Removal Note
1. Remove the clip.





2. Remove the ABS wheel speed sensor harness mounting nuts.





3. Separate the driver side drive shaft from the joint shaft by using a brass bar and a hammer.

Caution The sharp edges of the drive shaft snap ring can slice or puncture the oil seal. Be careful when removing the drive shaft from the transaxle.

Note Do not pry on the seal surface.





4. Separate the passenger side drive shaft from the transaxle by prying with a bar inserted between the outer ring and the transaxle, as shown in the figure.
5. Suspend the drive shaft with a rope.

Transaxle Removal Note

Warning
- Do not allow the transaxle to fall from the jack.
- Verify that the transaxle is securely supported by the jack. If the transaxle should fall, serious injury or death and damage to the vehicle could result. Before removing the transaxle, make sure that the jack is securely supporting it.






1. Loosen the SST (engine support) and lean the engine toward the transaxle.





2. Support the transaxle on a jack.
3. Remove the transaxle mounting bolts.
4. Remove the transaxle.

Transaxle Installation Note

Warning
- Do not allow the transaxle to fall from the jack.
- Verify that the transaxle is securely supported by the jack. If the transaxle should fall, serious injury or death and damage to the vehicle could result. Before removing the transaxle, make sure that the jack is securely supporting it.






1. Set the transaxle on a lack and lift it into place.





2. Install the transaxle mounting bolts.
Tightening torque
A: 90 - 116 Nm (9.1 - 11.9 kgf.m, 66 - 86 ft. lbs.)
B: 38 - 51 Nm (3.8 - 5.3 kgf.m, 28 - 38 ft. lbs.)
C: 19 - 25 Nm (1.9 - 2.6 kgf.m, 14 - 18 ft. lbs.)
3. Install the torque converter nuts.
Tightening torque
28 - 46 Nm (2.8 - 4.7 kgf.m, 21 - 33 ft. lbs.)
4. Hand tighten the No.4 engine mount nuts.

Joint Shaft Installation Note





1. Remove the SST from the transaxle case.
2. Verify that there is no damage to the oil seal.
3. Hand tighten bolts A.





4. Tighten the bolts A, B to the specified torque.
Tightening torque
43 - 61 Nm (4.3 - 6.3 kgf.m, 32 - 45 ft. lbs.)

Lower Arm Installation Note





1. Connect the lower arm to the knuckle and tighten the clinch bolt.
Tightening torque
37 - 53 Nm (3.7 - 5.5 kgf.m, 27 - 39 ft. lbs.)





2. Install the ABS wheel speed sensor harness mounting nuts.
Tightening torque
7.9 - 10.7 Nm (80 - 110 kgf.cm, 69.5 - 95.4 inch lbs.)
3. Install the clip.

Tie-Rod End Installation Note





1. Install the locknut.
Tightening torque
32 - 44 Nm (3.2 - 4.5 kgf.m, 24 - 32 ft. lbs.)
2. Secure the locknut by using a new cotter pin.

Engine Mount Member Installation Note





1. Position the direction indicator on engine mount member bushings facing toward the front side, and install the bushings onto the engine mount member.
2. To install the engine mount member, put the No.2 engine mount stud bolts through the engine mount member installation holes.
3. Install the engine mount member bolts A and nuts A.
Tightening torque
A: 67 - 93 Nm (6.8 - 9.5 kgf.m, 50 - 68 ft. lbs.)
4. Loosely tighten the No.2 engine mount nuts B.
5. Remove the SST (engine support).





6. Tighten the No.2 engine mount nuts B.
Tightening torque
B: 75 - 104 Nm (7.6 - 10.7 kgf.m, 55 - 77 ft. lbs.)
