Timing Belt: Service and Repair
Part 1 of 2
Part 2 of 2
TIMING BELT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [KJ]
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain the engine coolant.
3. Remove the right front wheel.
4. Remove in the order indicated in the table.
5. Install in the reverse order of removal.
6. Start the engine and inspect the following:
- Runout or contact of pulley or drive belt
- Ignition timing
7. Stop the engine and inspect the drive belt deflection.
8. Inspect the engine coolant level again.
Crankshaft Pulley Removal Note
1. Turn the crankshaft clockwise and face the pin on the crankshaft pulley downward.
2. Mount the SST on the crankshaft pulley to hold the crankshaft.
3. Remove timing belt pulley bolt A, then crankshaft pulley bolts B.
Caution: The CKP sensor rotor is on the rear of the crankshaft pulley, and can be damaged easily.
4. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
No.3 Engine Mount Removal Note
1. Suspend the engine using the SST.
2. Remove the No.3 engine mount sub bracket.
3. Remove the No.3 engine mount rubber.
4. Remove the No.3 engine mount bracket.
Timing Belt Removal Note
Note: Mark the timing belt rotation on the belt for proper reinstallation.
1. Install the timing belt pulley bolt into the crankshaft.
2. Turn the crankshaft clockwise and align the all timing marks. (No.1 piston is at TDC of the compression stroke.)
3. Remove the auto tensioner.
Caution: When removing the bolt, hold the tensioner so that the bolt holes are aligned. Otherwise the threads can be damaged.
4. Remove the timing belt.
Caution: The following will damage the belt and shorten its life: forcefully twisting it, turning it inside out, bending it, or allowing oil or grease on it.
Timing Belt Installation Note
1. Turn the camshafts clockwise and align the timing marks.
2. Using the timing belt pulley bolt, turn the crankshaft clockwise and align the timing marks.
3. Install the timing belt on the pulleys in the following order.
1. Timing belt pulley
2. No.2 idler pulley
3. Camshaft pulley (LH)
4. No.1 idler pulleys
5. Camshaft pulley (RH)
6. Tensioner pulley
4. Tighten the bolts while pressing the auto tensioner in the direction of the arrow, then tighten the auto tensioner mounting bolts to the specified torque.
Tightening torque 19 - 25 Nm (1.9 - 2.6 kgf-m, 14 - 18 ft. lbs.)
5. Remove the pin from the auto tensioner to apply tension to the belt.
6. Turn the crankshaft clockwise twice, and align the timing marks.
7. Verify that all timing marks are correctly aligned. If not, remove the timing belt and repeat from timing belt auto tensioner installation.
Timing Belt Auto Tensioner Installation Note
1. Measure the auto tensioner rod projection A.
- Replace the auto tensioner if necessary.
Projection A (free length) 14.3 - 15.1 mm (0.563 - 0.594 inch)
2. Inspect the auto tensioner for oil leakage.
- Replace the auto tensioner if necessary.
3. Slowly press in the tensioner rod using a press.
Caution: Applying pressure of more than 9.8 kN (1,000 kgf, 2,200 lbs) can damage the auto tensioner.
4. Insert a pin into the hole in the body as shown to hold the tensioner rod.
Pin diameter 1.4 mm (0.055 inch)
Timing Belt Cover Installation Note
1. Install the timing belt cover (upper) and tighten the bolts in the order shown.
Tightening torque 7.9 - 10.7 Nm (80 - 110 kgf-cm, 69.5 - 95.4 inch lbs.)
2. Install the timing belt covers (RH, LH) and tighten the bolts in the order shown.
Tightening torque 7.9 - 10.7 Nm (80 - 110 kgf-cm, 69.5 - 95.4 inch lbs.)
No.3 Engine Mount Installation Note
1. Install the No.3 engine mount bracket.
2. Install the No.3 engine mount rubber.
3. Install the No.3 engine mount sub bracket.
Tightening torque
A: 44 - 60 Nm (4.4 - 6.2 kgf-m, 32 - 44 ft. lbs.)
B: 75 - 104 Nm (7.6 - 10.7 kgf-m, 55 - 77 ft. lbs.)
4. Remove the SST (engine support).
Crankshaft Pulley Installation Note
1. Remove timing belt pulley bolt A.
2. Install the crankshaft pulley and hand tighten bolt A and bolts B.
3. Mount the SST on the crankshaft pulley to hold the crankshaft.
4. Tighten pulley bolts B. then crankshaft pulley bolt A.
Tightening torque
A: 157 - 166 Nm (16 - 17 kgf-m, 116 - 122 ft. lbs.)
B: 26 - 30 Nm (2.6 - 3.1 kgf-m, 19 - 22 ft. lbs.)
