High Clutch, High Clutch Hub and Front Sun Gear
HIGH CLUTCH, HIGH CLUTCH HUB AND FRONT SUN GEARPreparation
SST
Preinspection
High Clutch Operation
1. Check the clutch operation by applying compressed air through the fluid passages shown.
Air pressure: 390 kPa (4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi) max.
Disassembly/Inspection/Assembly
1. Disassemble in the order shown in the figure, referring to Disassembly Note.
2. Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly, referring to Assembly Procedure.
Disassembly Note
Snap Ring
1. Install the SST in the high clutch as shown.
CAUTION: Depress the return spring only enough to remove the snap ring. Overpressing will damage the spring retainer assembly edges.
2. Compress the return spring and spring retainer.
3. Remove the snap ring.
4. Remove the SST, and remove the return spring and spring retainer.
High Clutch Piston
Remove the high clutch piston by applying compressed air through the fluid passage.
Air pressure: 390 kPa (4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi) max.
Inspection
Drive plates
1. Measure the facing thickness in several places and calculate the average value.
Standard: 1.6 mm (0.063 inch)
Minimum: 1.4 mm (0.055 inch)
2. If not within the specification, replace the drive plates.
Return Spring
1. Measure the spring free length.
2. If not within the specifications, replace the spring.
High Clutch Piston
1. Verify that there is no air leakage when applying compressed air through the oil hole opposite the return spring.
2. Verify that there is air flow when applying compressed air through the oil hole on the return spring side.
Air pressure: 390 kPa (4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi) max.
Assembly Procedure
1. Install the high clutch piston.
1. Apply ATF to the inner and outer faces of the seals and install them to the high clutch piston
Seal ring inner diameter
Inner seal: 39.7 mm (11.563 inch)
Outer seal: 97.1 mm (3.823 inch)
CAUTION:
- Apply even pressure to the perimeter of the clutch piston when installing it to avoid damaging the seal ring.
- If the piston cannot be turned by hand, remove it and check for damage to the seal ring.
2. Install the clutch piston into the high clutch drum by turning it evenly and gradually.
3. Install the drive and driven plates in the following order.
Driven-Drive-Driven-Driven-Drive-Driven-Driven-Drive-Driven-Driven-Drive
4. Install the retaining plate.
5. Install the snap ring.
6. Measure the high clutch clearance.
1. Measure the clearance between the driven plate and the driven plate.
2. If the clearance is not within the specification, adjust it by selecting a proper retaining plate from below.
High clutch clearance: 1.8 - 2.2 mm (0.071 - 0.086 inch)
7. Remove the snap ring.
8. Remove the retaining plate, drive and driven plates.
9. Install the return spring.
10. Install the spring retainer.
11. Install the SST in the high clutch.
CAUTION: Depress the return spring only enough to install the snap ring. Overpressing will damage the spring retainer edges.
12. Compress the return spring.
13. Install the snap ring.
14. Remove the SST.
15. Install the drive and driven plates in the following order.
Driven-Drive-Driven-Driven-Drive-Driven-Driven-Drive-Driven-Driven-Drive
16. Install the retaining plate.
17. Install the snap ring.
18. Check the clutch operation by applying compressed air through the fluid passages shown.
Air pressure: 390 kPa (4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi) max.
19. Apply petroleum jelly to the thrust bearings, and secure them on the high clutch drum and high clutch hub. (Refer to page K1-90)
20. Install the high clutch hub.
CAUTION: Do not overexpand the seal rings when installing them.
21. Apply petroleum jelly to the seal rings, and install them to the high clutch.
Seal ring inner diameter: 21.9 mm (0.862 inch)
22. Apply petroleum jelly to the thrust bearings and bearing race, and secure them on the front sun gear.
23. Install the front sun gear.
