Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

A. Vehicle Inspection Procedure

1. Verify that the vehicle is within the following range:

^ 2003 Mazda6
VIN Range: 1YV*P80****M00001 - M99999

- If the vehicle is within the above range, proceed to the next step.

- If the vehicle is not within the above range, return the vehicle to the customer or inventory.

2. Perform a Vehicle Status Inquiry using your MDCS System and inspect vehicle for an Authorized Modification Label Recall 1403L attached to the vehicle's bulkhead. Refer to illustration.

NOTE:
Be sure to verify recall number as the vehicle may have multiple recalls.

- If MDCS displays Recall 1403L N and an Authorized Modification Label is not present, the recall has not been performed. Proceed to "B. INSPECTION PROCEDURE".

- If MDCS displays Recall 1403L N and an Authorized Modification Label is present, contact the Warranty Department. They will update the vehicle warranty.

- If MDCS displays Recall 1403L D and an Authorized Modification Label is not present, proceed to "E. AUTHORIZED MODIFICATION LABEL INSTALLATION".

- If MDCS displays Recall 1403L D and an Authorized Modification Label is present, the recall has already been completed. Return the vehicle to the customer or inventory.

- If MDCS does not display Recall 1403L N or Recall 1403L D, this recall does not apply to the vehicle. Return vehicle to the customer or inventory.

Inspection and Repair Procedure Notes:

NOTE:
THIS INSPECTION AND REPAIR PROCEDURE SUPERSEDES ALL PREVIOUSLY RELEASED INSTRUCTIONS CONCERNING THE "2003 MAZDA6 FUEL ODOR RECALL #1403L." THE FOLLOWING ARE THE MAIN POINTS ADDED TO THESE INSTRUCTIONS:

^ Page 11, Step 30: If the white label is missing from the exterior of the fuel tank, refer to the production stamping found on the bottom of the fuel tank.

^ Page 20, Step 49: When the lock ring is being tightened, it is normal to feel some roughness.

^ Page 21, Step 52: The torque specification is the minimum torque. The most important point is to align/place the lock ring arrow in the proper position.

NOTE:
THE INSPECTION & REPAIR PROCEDURE VIDEO PROVIDED TO ALL DEALERS IS STILL VALID AS A REFERENCE AID.

THE "B. INSPECTION PROCEDURE" MUST BE PERFORMED ON ALL SUBJECT VEHICLES. THE INSPECTION PROCEDURE RESULTS WILL DETERMINE WHICH, IF ANY, REPAIR PROCEDURE IS REQUIRED.

THIS RECALL ALSO CONTAINS FOUR (4) DIFFERENT REPAIR PROCEDURES (A, B, C, & D). MOST VEHICLES WILL NOT REQUIRE ANY REPAIR, HOWEVER, A SMALL NUMBER OF VEHICLES MAY REQUIRE REPAIR.

Special Tools:

There are three (3) special tools required to conduct the inspection and repairs. One (1) set of tools were shipped free of charge to each dealer on Dec. 1, 2003. Do not attempt to conduct the inspection or repairs without the special tools.
