Brakes - Front brake Squeak/Moan When Cold
TSB: 04-004/062003-2005 MAZDA6
SQUEAK/MOAN NOISE FROM FRONT BRAKES
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2003 - 2005 Mazda6
DESCRIPTION
Symptom 1:
When cold, a sharp METALLIC noise may occur from the front brakes WITHOUT ANY BRAKE APPLICATION while turning or driving at a low speed because the strength of the hooks for the guide plate is insufficient. Generally when it is cold, the pad and guide plate on the front mounting support easily get frozen and move together when the brakes are applied. This causes the guide plate to move out of position and come into contact with the rotor, making a noise.
As service parts, the number of hooks on the guide plate has been increased to six (6) to prevent the guide plate from moving out of position.
Symptom 2:
At normal operating temperature, a squeak / moan noise may occur during light brake pedal application because a stick-slip situation between the brake pads and the rotor causes a resonance of brake parts. Front brake pads with a different friction material has been established as a service part.
Customers having either one of these concerns should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Verify customer concern.
2. If symptom 1 is verified, or any breakage of the guide plate is observed, replace the guide plate with the modified one according the workshop manual.
3. If symptom 2 is verified, replace the front brake pads with the special friction material brake pads according to the workshop manual.
NOTE:
The special pads (GNYD-33-23ZA) may give a different brake pedal feeling after replacement due to a different friction material than original equipped pads (G2YS-33-23ZA). The special brake pads are better for brake noise but it gives a softer brake feeling than the original equipped brake pads, which gives more solid brake feeling.
NOTE:
This is special friction material pads and very limited supply from the supplier. Use special pads only for resolving noise complaints. Do NOT use the pads at regular brake service.
4. Verify repair.
