Interior - Shift Panel Removal Precautions

DESCRIPTION

When removing the shift panel, special attention is required to release the lock(s) attaching the shift panel to the center console. If the lock(s) are broken, the shift panel may not attach properly, causing a poor fitting appearance.

This service tip is being released to identify correct removal points for the shift panel to prevent damage.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Set the parking brake.

2. Place the vehicle in Neutral (N). Ensure ignition is off.

3. Remove shift knob.





4. Slide back the console lid. Remove the cover at the rear of the shift panel by sliding rearward. If necessary, use a Plastic Windshield Setting Tool or equivalent to release the lock at the bottom of the cover, inside the center console.

NOTE:

^ Plastic Windshield Setting Tool (Part Number IS742 - available from Equalizer) or similar available through a local supplier.

^ If a flat-tipped screwdriver is to be used, wrap the tip in tape to prevent damage to the center console or the shift panel.





5. Using a Plastic Windshield Setting Tool or equivalent, insert between the center console and the shift panel at the points indicated. Carefully pry upward to release the 3 locks.

NOTE:





^ Note location of locks and areas recommended to insert Plastic Windshield Setting Tool or equivalent to remove.

6. Detach the remaining locks by carefully pulling upward on shift panel to release.

Disconnect any electrical connectors and remove shift panel from vehicle.

NOTE:

^ Use care when removing the shift panel as to not damage the center panel with the front corners of the shift panel. Damage due to improper shift panel removal is not covered by Mazda Warranty and claims where the shift panel is found damaged will be denied or debited to the repairing dealer.
