APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS

2004-2006 RX-8 equipped with 18 inch wheels (12.7 inch diameter front discs)

DESCRIPTION

Some vehicles may experience a "squeal" noise from the front brakes when braking. This may be caused by the front brake hardware and/or pad material.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE:
The configuration of the brake pad hardware set and grease (included with brake pad kit) has changed from the original design. Please note specific items listed during pad replacement. Failure to install the brake pads as per this procedure may result in repeat brake squeal noise concerns.

1. Verify customer concern.

2. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels.

3. Remove and discard brake pads, shims and springs.

4. Clean brake caliper and caliper mounting bracket using suitable cleaning solution.

5. Place shims and Black grease (included with brake pad kit) on pads as shown and install in the following order:

a. Brake Pad

b. Black Shim

c. Steel Shim

CAUTION:

^ DO NOT allow grease to get on rotor or brake pad friction surfaces as decreased or uneven braking may result. If grease gets onto rotor or brake pad friction surfaces, thoroughly clean with a suitable brake parts cleaner before installation.

6. Install wear sensor clip on bottom of passenger side inner brake pad (on brake pad that is installed against the caliper piston).

7. Apply White grease (included with brake pad kit) to caliper bracket and caliper as shown and install new springs onto caliper bracket.

CAUTION:
DO NOT allow grease to get on rotor or brake pad friction surfaces as decreased or uneven braking may result. If grease gets onto rotor or brake pad friction surfaces, thoroughly clean with a suitable brake parts cleaner before installation.

8. Install new brake pads and reinstall calipers following Workshop Manual section 04-11 DISC PAD (FRONT) REPLACEMENT.

9. Verify repair.
