Keyless Entry System - Various System Issues

2006 MX-5 - ADVANCED KEYLESS SYSTEM INOPERATIVE

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
^ 2006 MX-5 vehicles equipped with Advanced Keyless System and VINs lower than JM1 NC**** ** 111535 (produced before December 27, 2005)

DESCRIPTION

Some customers may experience one or more of the following conditions.

^ All advanced keyless card key functions are inoperative.

^ Advanced keyless door and trunk request switches are inoperative.

^ Ignition switch start knob cannot be turned to start engine.

^ Auxiliary key must be used to lock, unlock and start vehicle.

^ Conventional (auxiliary) key must be used to lock/unlock doors.

^ Conventional (auxiliary) key must be used to start vehicle.

On some vehicles the keyless control module can intermittently drop the card key ID data resulting in the above mentioned conditions. The keyless control module software has been improved to prevent this condition. Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the repair procedures.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify customer concern.

2. Verify condition of advanced (card) key battery. Verify the LED illuminates on the card key when any button is pressed on the card key.

3. Replace the keyless control module with a modified one. Refer to Workshop Manual section 09-14A - KEYLESS CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

NOTE:
^ The advanced keyless entry system programming, steering lock unit registration and immobilizer system programming (for immobilizer system-equipped vehicles) will be required after the keyless control module replacement.

^ For advanced keyless entry system programming refer to Workshop Manual section 09-14A - CARD KEY ID CODE REGISTRATION ADVANCED KEYLESS SYSTEM.

^ For steering lock unit registration refer to Workshop Manual section 09-14A - STEERING LOCK UNIT ID CODE REGISTRATION WITH ADVANCED KEYLESS SYSTEM]

^ For immobilizer system programming (on immobilizer equipped vehicles) refer to Workshop Manual section 09-14A - IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM COMPONENT REPLACEMENT/KEY ADDITION AND CLEARING [WITH ADVANCED KEYLESS SYSTEM].

4. Verify repair.
