MAZDA SERVICE PROGRAM (MSP17) - INCORRECT AIRFLOW FROM MODE CONTROL SELECTION - (MANUAL HVAC ONLY)
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
^ 2008 MAZDA6 vehicles equipped with manual HVAC built from March 10, 2008 through April 7, 2008
^ 2008 VIN Range: 1YVHP8***85M32769 - 1YVHP8***85M45717
DESCRIPTION
Some 2008 MAZDA6 vehicles equipped with manual HVAC controls may exhibit incorrect airflow in response to mode control selection. Some mode actuators may have damaged alignment potentiometers.
NOTE:
^ UNDER THE MAZDA SERVICE PROGRAM (MSP17), ALL CURRENT DEALER INVENTORY AND RETAILED VEHICLES FOUND TO BE WITHIN THE ABOVE VIN RANGES, AND PRODUCED BETWEEN MAR. 10, 2008 THROUGH APR. 7, 2008, MUST BE INSPECTED AND REPAIRED ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS CONTAINED IN THIS SERVICE BULLETIN.
^ BEFORE PERFORMING ANY REPAIR, VALIDATE THAT THE VEHICLE IS APPLICABLE TO THIS PROGRAM BY PERFORMING AN "eMDCS WARRANTY VEHICLE INQUIRY" AND VERIFYING THE VEHICLE DISPLAYS CAMPAIGN "MSP17" AND ITS CAMPAIGN STATUS DISPLAYS "OPEN". SEE "VEHICLE INSPECTION PROCEDURE" BELOW.
DEALER INVENTORY:
Inspect and repair all applicable vehicles currently in dealer inventory according to the procedures contained in
this service bulletin.
RETAIL VEHICLES:
When an applicable retail vehicle is brought into the dealer for any type of repair or scheduled maintenance, perform an eMDCS Warranty Vehicle Inspection and check the status of MSP17. If status of MSP17 is "OPEN" inspect and repair if necessary, the vehicle according to the procedures contained in this service bulletin.
VEHICLE INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1. Verify the vehicle is within one of the following VIN ranges and produced between March 10, 2008 through April 7, 2008:
^ 2008 MAZDA6 equipped with Manual HVAC
VIN Range: 1YVHP8***85M32769 - 1YVHP8***85M45717
- If the vehicle is within the above VIN range, and produced between March 10, 2008 through April 7, 2008, proceed to Step 2.
6 If the vehicle is not within the above VIN range, return the vehicle to the customer or inventory.
2. Perform a Warranty Vehicle Inquiry using your eMDCS System and inspect the vehicle for a Campaign Label MSP17 attached to the vehicle's hood. Refer to eMDCS System - Warranty Vehicle Inquiry Results table shown above.
NOTE:
Verify the campaign number as the vehicle may have multiple labels.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Turn ignition to ON position.
2. Set HVAC mode selector dial to defrost position.
3. Once mode has fully changed, turn ignition to LOCK position.
4. Remove glove compartment:
a. Open glove compartment.
b. Remove damper clip string from right side of glove compartment.
c. Press both sides of glove compartment inward until it releases from dash.
d. Hold glove compartment in a level position (not fully lowered).
NOTE:
DO NOT force the glove compartment loose; the hooks can be easily broken. The glove compartment will not come out if held too low or too high. When held in a level position, the glove compartment will come out easily.
e. Gently pull the glove compartment toward you until the hooks come loose.
5. Through glove compartment opening, locate mode selector actuator.
6. Disconnect actuator connector.
7. Remove two (2) gold colored hex screws (with 6 mm socket and 1/4" drive finger ratchet or short ratchet).
8. Insert screwdriver (3/8" blade, round shaft, 8"-12" long) under actuator connector and between actuator housing and plate making sure screwdriver blade inserts between actuator and plate.
9. Gently push screwdriver between actuator and plate until it contacts the shaft. Slide blade slightly to left until it dead heads on plate.
10. Gently twist screwdriver counterclockwise to pop off actuator without disturbing cam.
11. Attach actuator connector to new actuator and turn ignition to ON position. Wait for actuator to finish moving, then turn ignition to LOCK position.
12. Disconnect actuator connector.
13. Verify cam shaft flats are oriented vertically (up and down).
14. Push actuator in place and reinstall two (2) gold screws.
15. Attach actuator connector and check functions.
Function Check:
Perform HVAC Functional check to verify all mode operations.
- If function check is ok, proceed to Step 25.
- If function check fails, proceed to Step 16.
NOTE:
^ When mode is set to FLOOR position, some air will also come from DEFROST vent; this is normal.
^ If not changing from panel mode, this indicates actuator is 180° out of phase to cam.
16. Disconnect actuator connector.
17. Remove two (2) gold colored screws.
18. Remove actuator.
19. Reconnect actuator connector.
20. Turn ignition to ON position.
21. Change HVAC mode selector dial to panel position to adjust actuator position.
22. Disconnect connector and reinstall actuator.
23. Reinstall connector.
24. Repeat function check.
25. Reinstall glove box.
26. Fill out a blue "Campaign Label" (9999-95-065A-05) with the Campaign No: "MSP17", your dealer code, today's date, and affix it to the vehicle's hood.
27. Return vehicle to customer or dealer inventory.
