Interior - Seat Back Heater Inoperative

SEAT BACK WARMER IS INOPERATIVE

2006-2010 Mazda5

DESCRIPTION

On some vehicles, the seat back warmer may be inoperative even if the switch is turned on.

NOTE:
This Service Bulletin only applies to vehicles with concerns related to SEAT BACK WARMER being inoperative. If the SEAT CUSHION WARMER is also inoperative, please consult workshop manual for diagnosis and repairs.





This concern may be caused by seat back warmer harness breakage as shown at location (A).

Protection Tape (B), Protection Tube (C) and Harness Pad (D).





Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Verify customer concern.

2. Replace the seat back warmer with a modified part according to the following procedure.

3. Remove the seat back trim according to TSB 09-076/09 (SEAT TRIM REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE).

4. Peel off and remove the seat back warmer (A) from the seat back pad.

NOTE:
Be careful not to damage the pad while removing the warmer. To remove the warmer when it is stuck to the pad, use a hair drier or heat gun to apply warm air.





5. Install the new seat back warmer.

NOTE:
^ The improved harness has a longer uncovered area (A) to prevent stress concentration.

^ Harness Pad (B).





6. Route the seat back warmer harness (A) to the back of the pad through the hole (B) on the bottom of the pad.





7. Remove the backing paper and attach the seat back warmer as shown in position (A).

NOTE:
^ Attach from top side (B) then bottom side (C).

^ Attach the warmer in the center of the pad.

^ DO NOT stick it out to the groove. DO NOT fold or wrinkle the warmer.





8. Insert the bridge portion (A) of the warmer to the bottom of the groove.

NOTE:
DO NOT lap the warmer over the C-ring fixing points (B).





9. To prevent rubbing noise, attach Felt "A" (C) to the harness (D) hole as shown below. Seat Warmer (A) and Pad (B).

NOTE:
Felt "A" size: 40mm X 60mm.





10. Install seat back trim to the pad.

11. Attach Felt "B" (A) to the seat frame member spring where the seat back warmer harness (B) contacts. Fold felt in half around the spring.

NOTE:
Felt "B" size: 40mm x 110mm.





12. Install the seat back to the seat frame member.

13. Fix the harness with a band (A) at the square hole on the seat frame member (B).

NOTE:
^ Fix the harness at the marking which is printed on it.

^ Fix together with a side air bag harness.

^ After fixing the harness, turn the band and face the band lock forward to prevent contact between the lock and seat back trim.

14. Install the removed parts in reverse order of removal.

15. Verify repair.
