DESCRIPTION
This Service Information is to provide Mazda Dealers with supplemental technical information to assist technicians in the appropriate handling of the Motor/Control Unit, and prevent unnecessary replacement of it.
NOTE:
Attention requested when performing Recall 6010H or repair of EHPAS (DTC-C1099)
1. Aluminum surface corrosion on matching surface of the P/S pump and the Motor/Control Unit.
In some cases, various levels of corrosion might be found when performing recall campaign 6010H or EHPAS repair due to DTC C1099. It is not necessary to remove the corrosion as it does not affect proper operation of the pump and motor.
The Motor/Control Unit can remain on the vehicle and does not require replacement, regardless of the amount of corrosion on the surface. It should only be replaced if it fails inspection according to the Work-shop Manual. The P/S pump section is replaced with a new or remanufactured part according to repair procedure of recall 6010H or DTC C1099, regardless of the amount of corrosion.
DO NOT wash or grind the corroded surface, but remove loose particles of aluminum corrosion (if there is any on the surface) with a soft brush (paint brush) or by blowing it with compressed air. To prevent loose particles from entering the control unit, place tape over the open holes on the control unit.
2. Power-steering fluid (ATF: Automatic Transmission Fluid) in the Motor/Control Unit.
In some cases, a certain amount of ATF may accumulate in the Motor/Control Unit, and can be seen in the open holes of the control unit when the P/S pump is removed from Motor/Control Unit. This residual ATF is acceptable, and the Motor/Control Unit is okay to reuse because ATF will not have any harmful effects. The ATF must be drained from the open holes by turning the Motor/Control Unit upside down.
NOTE:
If foreign materials other than ATF get into the Motor/Control Unit, replace it with new one.
