INTERMITTENT SELF-ACTIVATING HORN

2009-2010 Mazda6 vehicles produced before Oct. 12, 2009

DESCRIPTION

Some vehicles may exhibit an intermittent self-activating horn when turning the steering wheel to the left or right. This may be caused by a short circuit between the edge of the horn plate and steering horn switch harness. To eliminate this concern, the design of the horn plate and steering horn switch harness have been changed.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

WARNING:
Before beginning this repair, be sure to read all air bag system warnings and cautions information on MS3 online or Workshop Manual (section 08-10 AIR BAG SYSTEM SERVICE WARNINGS) and (section 08-10 AIR BAG SYSTEM SERVICE CAUTIONS).

1. Verify customer concern.





2. Remove the driver-side air bag module (A) according MS3 online instructions or Workshop Manual (section 08-10 DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).





3. Inspect for damage to the horn switch harness (A). If damaged, repair it with electrical tape (B).





4. Cut 100 mm x 37 mm pad (tape) into two (2) pieces (50 mm x 37 mm each) as shown.

5. Cut a 15 mm slit (A) into both ends of the pad (tape) as shown.





6. Apply one (1) pad (tape) over the right side of the horn plate as shown (only 1 piece needed per repair).

7. Reinstall the driver-side air bag module according MS3 online instructions or Workshop Manual (section 08-10 DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).

8. Operate the steering and horn to verify the repair.
