FS5A-EL TRANSAXLE FLUID DIAGNOSIS
APPLICABLE MODEL(S) / VINS
2009 MAZDA6 equipped with FS5A-EL transaxle
DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles equipped with a FS5A-EL transaxle may experience a concern of external transaxle fluid on the transaxle body. To correctly diagnose the root cause, use the following procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Verify customer concern.
2. Thoroughly clean transaxle fluid from surface of transaxle, especially around oil pressure switch and edge of oil pan.
3. Start engine and warm up completely.
WARNING:
Be very careful around hot transaxle and ATF. They can cause severe burns.
4. Inspect for fluid leak.
- If no leak is found, fluid spill occurred during manufacturing process; no repair is necessary.
- If leak is found around oil pressure switch, proceed to Step 5.
- If leak is found other than around oil pressure switch, proceed with normal Workshop Manual diagnosis and repair.
5. Check oil pressure switch tightening torque.
- If tightening torque is less than 14 - 16 ft. lbf. (18 - 22 Nm, 1.9 - 2.2 kgf-m), tighten oil pressure switch to specification, then repeat Steps 2 - 4.
- If tightening torque is within specification, replace pressure switch and washer/gasket according to Workshop Manual (section 05-17A OIL PRESSURE SWITCH REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [FS5A-EL]), then repeat Step 2 - 4.
WARNING:
Be very careful around hot transaxle and ATF. They can cause severe burns. Wait for transaxle and ATF to cool before replacing oil pressure switch.
6. Verify repair.
