Engine Controls - Fast Idle Duration Information
Bulletin No: 01-027/08Last Issued: 4/16/2008
Subject:
FAST IDLE DURATION CHANGED
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2009 RX-8
DESCRIPTION
The original setting of fast idle duration at a cold engine start-up has been changed since start of production of the 2009 RX-8. This service bulletin is for aid in understanding the differences and advantages between previous and current fast idle duration.
NOTE:
^ The fast idle duration is only active until the pre-delivery mode is cancelled during PDI. The pre-delivery mode is cancelled by driving the vehicle for 5 consecutive miles.
The purpose of this design change is to help engine start-ability at port facilities or dealer lots where vehicles are frequently started cold, moved for short distances and then tuned off.
If the vehicle is shifted into Drive or Reverse (AT) or any gear but neutral (MT) during the 180 second fast idle duration the engine RPM will drop to 1000 RPM (AT) or base idle (MT) to prevent sudden movement due to the high idle speed condition as outlined in the graph.
WARNING:
^ Because of the high idle speed, use care when placing the vehicle into Drive or Reverse (AT) or when engaging the clutch (MT) to prevent sudden vehicle movement.
Before turning the engine off, allow the idle to stabilize after the 180 second fast idle duration. This will ensure the engine will start during the next cold engine start-up.
