Removal and Replacement
AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [FS5A-EL]
CAUTION:
- Secure the steering wheel using tape or a cable to prevent the steering shaft from rotating after disconnecting the steering shaft. If the steering wheel rotates after the steering shaft and the steering gear and linkage are disconnected, the internal parts of the clock spring could be damaged.
1. Remove the battery cover. Removal and Replacement
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the battery duct. Removal and Replacement
4. Remove the following parts.
a. Battery, battery tray and battery box. Removal and Replacement
b. Air cleaner component. Service and Repair
c. Windshield wiper arm and blade
d. Cowl grille
e. Cowl panel
f. Exhaust manifold insulator.
g. Front tires and splash shield.
h. Under cover.
i. No.1 reserve tank with the hose still connected and position the No.1 reserve tank aside so that it is out of the way
j. Reserve tank bracket
5. Drain the ATF. Procedures
WARNING:
- Improperly jacking a transaxle is dangerous. It can slip off the jack and may cause serious injury.
CAUTION:
- To prevent the torque converter and transaxle from separating, remove the transaxle without tilting it toward the torque converter.
6. Remove in the order indicated in the table.
7. Install in the reverse order of removal.
8. Add ATF to the specified level. Procedures
9. Perform the following test. Mechanical System Test Road Test

Test to be performed after the service work
Torque Converter Nuts Removal Note
1. Hold the crankshaft pulley to prevent the drive plate from rotating.
2. Remove the torque converter nuts from the starter installation hole.
No.4 Engine Mount Removal Note
1. To install the front shaft (RH) of the SST (49 C017 5A0), remove the clip shown in the figure.
2. Install the SST using the following procedure.
CAUTION:
- Refer to the SST instruction manual for the basic handing procedure.
a. Install the right rear shaft of the SST to the bolt of the right shock absorber as shown in the figure.
b. Install the left rear shaft of the SST to the bolt of the left shock absorber (Identical position to right side).
c. Install front foot No.2 to the right front shaft of the SST, then align the groove of the right front shaft of the SST with the folded up part of the vehicle as shown in the figure.
d. Install front foot No.2 to the left front shaft of the SST, then align the groove of the left front shaft of the SST with the folded up part of the vehicle frame (Identical position to right side).
e. Adjust the positions of the SST side bars so that they are the same height (left and right) and horizontal.
f. Make sure each joint is securely tightened.
3. Suspend the engine using the SST.
4. Remove the battery tray bracket, No.4 engine mount rubber and bracket.
Transaxle Removal Note
WARNING:
- Remove the transaxle carefully, holding it steady. If the transmission falls it could be damaged or cause injury.
CAUTION:
- To prevent the torque converter and transmission from separating, remove the transmission without tilting it toward the torque converter.
1. Remove the clip A.
2. Remove the clip B from the brake pipe.
NOTE:
- To prevent interference with the ATX, move the brake pipe and secure a space.
3. Lean the engine toward the transaxle.
4. Support the transaxle on a jack.
5. Remove the transaxle mounting bolts.
6. Remove the transaxle.
Transaxle Installation Note
WARNING:
- Install the transaxle carefully, holding it steady. If the transmission falls it could be damaged or cause injury.
CAUTION:
- To prevent the torque converter and transmission from separating, install the transmission without tilting it toward the torque converter.
1. Set the transaxle on a jack and lift it.
2. Install the transaxle mounting bolts.
Bolt length (measured from below the head)
- A: 50 mm {1.967 in}
- B: 65 mm {2.559 in}
Tightening torque
- 37.3-52.0 Nm
{3.8-5.3 kgf-m, 27.6-38.3 ft-lbf}
3. Install the brake pipe the clip B.
4. Install the clip A.
No.1 Engine Mount and No.4 Engine Mount Installation Note
1. Install the No.4 engine mount bracket on the transaxle case and tighten nuts.
2. Install the No.1 engine mount bracket to the No.1 engine mount rubber and temporarily tighten bolts.
3. Place the No.4 engine mount rubber with the body stud bolts passing through the holes and tighten the bolt as shown in the figure.
4. Place the battery tray bracket over the No.4 engine mount bracket with the body stud bolts passing through the holes.
5. Place the dynamic damper over the battery tray bracket with the body stud bolts passing through the holes, then tighten the bolts and nuts in the order shown in the figure.
6. Remove the SST.
7. Install the clip as shown in the figure.
8. Fully tighten the bolt.
Torque Converter Nuts Installation Note
1. Hold the crankshaft pulley to prevent the drive plate from rotating.
CAUTION:
- Loosely and equally tighten the torque converter nuts, then further tighten them to the specified tightening torque.
2. Tighten the torque converter mounting nuts.
Tightening torque
- 40.5-54.7 Nm
