How to use this Transmission Repair Guide
This guide was provided to clarify the repair procedures and use of special service tools for the Mazda Miata 6-Speed Manual Transmission. You are guided step by step through the disassembly, inspection and assembly of this transmission.

- Whenever handling lubricants or fluids, always wear protective gloves
- When required, always wear proper eye protection
- Always follow equipment manufacturers safety recommendations

Advice Before You Begin:
A. Get 5-one-gallon plastic bags
B. Write the following labels and place one label in each of the 5-bags:






C. Lay all of the parts out in order of disassembly. You will need approximately 5-feet of workbench space
D. There is a Component Identification chart at the beginning of each disassembly and assembly section. The chart lists all of the parts in the same order as the disassembly and assembly steps of the section it precedes
E. There are Optional Steps in this manual. Use your judgment based on the customers concern and on what you find in the transmission to determine whether you will remove or disassemble components. Keep your eyes open for the note: "Optional Steps"
F. All Snap-Rings, Spring-Pins and Seals must be replaced
G. Photocopy the below image to keep track of the location and size of all Selective Snap-Rings. Record the size of each Snap-Ring as you remove it, and place it on the sheet. This will speed up transmission assembly

Expendable parts you must replace when you disassemble the entire transmission

Order these parts before assembling the transmission:
- The control case housing Gasket (see Extension Housing Assembly part #21)
- The rear output shaft retaining ring and both front retaining rings (see Transmission Case and 6th Gear Assembly part #11 and 12)
- Both reverse idler shaft seals (2) (see Transmission Case and 6th Gear Assembly part # 13 and see Clutch Housing, Shift Fork Assembly part #16)
- The front seal should be replaced (see Transmission Case and 6th Gear Assembly part # 17)
- Both Speedometer Gear Snap-Rings (see Extension Housing Assembly part #1 and 4)
- The rear seal should be replaced (see Extension Housing Assembly part #5)
- If you replace the control rod bushing, the plug and bushing must be replaced (see Extension Housing Assembly part #6 and 7)
- The Speedometer Sensor O-Ring (see Extension Housing Assembly part #25)
- The Backup light switch seal (see Extension Housing Assembly part #23)
- Both the drain and fill plug seals (see Extension Housing Assembly part #26 and 27)
- All Spring-Pins that are removed (5-total, some will not be removed depending on how far you disassemble the transmission)

Order these parts during transmission assembly
- The thrust washer and all selective Snap-Rings must be replaced once they are removed. Measure the thrust clearances during assembly and order replacement Snap-Rings (6-total) and a Thrust Washer

Additional items needed for transmission assembly:
- Blue Loctite
- Red Loctite
- RTV Sealant
- Molybdenum Sulfide Grease
- Transmission Lubricant A.P.I. GL-4 or GL-5 (All season SAE 75W90 or Above 10 °C (50 °F) SAE 80W90)
