Road Test
ROAD TEST [FN4A-EL]
WARNING:
- When performing a road test, be aware of other vehicles, people, impediments, etc. to avoid an accident.
NOTE:
- When the legal speed limit must be exceeded, use a chassis dynamometer.
Road Test Preparation
1. Inspect the engine coolant. Engine Coolant Level Inspection
2. Inspect the engine oil. Testing and Inspection
3. Inspect the ATF. Testing and Inspection
4. Inspect the idle speed. Service and Repair
5. Inspect the ignition timing. Service and Repair
6. Verify that no DTCs recorded. Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Shift Diagram (Normal Mode at D Position)
D Position Test
1. Perform "Road Test Preparation".
2. Warm-up the transaxle until the ATF temperature reaches 60-70 °C {140-158 °F}.
3. Shift the selector lever to the D position.
4. Perform the road test in the D position (O/D OFF switch not operating).
- If there is any malfunction, perform the "Symptom Troubleshooting". Symptom Troubleshooting Item Table
a. Accelerate the vehicle by depressing the accelerator pedal, and verify that the gears upshift 1GR -> 2GR, 2GR -> 3GR, and 3GR -> O/D. The shift point must be as shown in the table below.
b. Decelerate the vehicle in O/D, then verify that the gears downshift O/D -> 3GR, 3GR -> 2GR, 2GR -> 1GR and 3GR -> 1GR. The shift point must be as shown in the table below.
c. Drive the vehicle in O/D, 3GR, and 2GR and verify that kickdown occurs for O/D -> 3GR, 3GR -> 2GR, 2GR -> 1GR downshifts, and that the shift points are as shown in the table below.
d. Decelerate the vehicle and verify that engine braking effect is felt in 2GR, 3GR, and O/D.
e. Drive the vehicle and verify that TCC operation is obtained. The operation points must be as shown in the table below.

5. Perform the road test in the D position (O/D OFF switch operating).
- If there is any malfunction, perform the "Symptom Troubleshooting". Symptom Troubleshooting Item Table
a. Set the O/D OFF switch ON.
b. Accelerate the vehicle by depressing the accelerator pedal, and verify that the gears upshift 1GR -> 2GR and 2GR -> 3GR. The shift point must be as shown in the table below.
c. Decelerate the vehicle in 3GR, then verify that the gears downshift 3GR -> 2GR, 2GR -> 1GR and 3GR -> 1GR. The shift point must be as shown in the table below.
d. Drive the vehicle in 3GR and 2GR and verify that kickdown occurs for 3GR -> 2GR and 2GR -> 1GR downshifts, and that the shift points are as shown in the table below.
e. Decelerate the vehicle and verify that engine braking effect is felt in 2GR and 3GR.

2 Position Test
1. Perform "Road Test Preparation".
2. Warm-up the transaxle until the ATF temperature reaches 60-70 °C {140-158 °F}.
3. Shift the selector lever to the 2 position.
4. Perform the road test in the 2 position.
- If there is any malfunction, perform the "Symptom Troubleshooting". Symptom Troubleshooting Item Table
a. Accelerate the vehicle by depressing the accelerator pedal, and verify that 2GR is held.
b. Drive the vehicle and verify that kickdown does not occur.
c. Decelerate the vehicle and verify that engine braking effect is felt.
NOTE:
- Under the following conditions, shift-down does not operate to prevent excess engine speed even if the selector lever is shifted to the 2 position.
- Vehicle speed exceeds 146 km/h {90.8 mph} while driving in O/D
- Vehicle speed exceeds 98 km/h {61 mph} while driving in 3GR
1 Position Test
1. Perform "Road Test Preparation".
2. Warm-up the transaxle until the ATF temperature reaches 60-70 °C {140-158 °F}.
3. Shift the selector lever to the 1 position.
4. Perform the road test in the 1 position.
- If there is any malfunction, perform the "Symptom Troubleshooting". Symptom Troubleshooting Item Table
a. Accelerate the vehicle by depressing the accelerator pedal, and verify that 1GR is held.
b. Decelerate the vehicle and verify that engine braking effect is felt.
NOTE:
- Under the following conditions, shift-down does not operate to prevent excess engine speed even if the selector lever is shifted to the 1 position.
- Vehicle speed exceeds 146 km/h {90.8 mph} while driving in O/D
- Vehicle speed exceeds 98 km/h {61 mph} while driving in 3GR
- Vehicle speed exceeds 43 km/h {27 mph} while driving in 2GR
P Position Test
1. Shift the selector lever to the P position on a gentle slope.
2. Release the brake and verify that the vehicle does not roll.
- If the vehicle rolls, inspect the parking mechanism in the transaxle.
