Airbag For Driver
Installation Instructions91.3 Airbag For Driver
Type 463
The installation of the airbag system, in addition to the standard three-point seat belts, provides increased protection in the event of head-on collisions. The airbag is electronically monitored, in the instrument cluster is the indicator/warning lamp Airbag SRS(Supplemental Restraint System).
When retrofitting the airbag, the airbag control unit (AB) is used which is a standard installation in cars as from 07/93.
The airbag control unit(AB) has 2 release thresholds,
1st release threshold: not active
2nd release threshold: drivers's airbag
it is not possible to additionally retrofit an airbag for the front passenger.
Legal regulations
In the Federal Republic of Germany official installation acceptance must be obtained from the TUV/TUA and a registration made in the vehicle documents. For this purpose the enclosed clearance confirmation(refer to enclosure) and confirmation from a Mercedes-Benz service station regarding the correct installation in accordance with the installation instructions must be presented to the TUV/TUA.
Export countries
After conversion, observe the respective country-specific legal regulations.

003 Multimeter 2 Connecting aid
004 Socket box 3 Looking means for connecting aid
Connect socket box (004) with test cable harness (002) to coupling of airbag control unit (AB, 1).
Connect multimeter (003) to corresponding sockets of the socket box (004).
Specified value between socket 5-6, voltage apply 11 - 14 volt.
Connect coupling of airbag control unit (AB).
Connect ground cable to battery.
Turn Ignition key into position "1" and check the system with the indicator/warning tamp Airbag SRS.
NOTE: The indicator/warning lamp Airbag SRS must go out after approx. 4 s, If the indicator/warning lamp does not go out after approx. 4 s, it is necessary to carry out the programming and parameter input of the airbag control unit (AB). (refer to section C)
C. Programming and parameter input of the airbag control unit (AB)
CAUTION:
- With subsequent installation of all airbag control unit (AB), parameter input must be carried out with the module "model 124, 01/94".
- If the wrong selection is made and parameter input is carried out. the airbag control unit (AB) is defective.
Parameter Input
After installing the airbag control unit the indicator/warning lamp SRS (A1e15) lights up, as the parameter input of the airbag control unit (AB) has not yet been carried out. The cross-country vehicle has its own parameter set.
Parameter input can only be carried out via the hand-held tester (HHT).
CAUTION: The voltage supply is not to be interrupted during parameter input, as otherwise the airbag control unit (AB) will be defective.
Parameter input can only be carried out once.
NOTE: After parameter input switch ignition off and on. delete error memory of the system. indicator/warning lamp Airbag SRS (A1e15) goes out.
D. Loose sheet on driver's airbag
Copy the 2 loose sheet on driver's airbag, cut out along the lines, attach and add to the customer operating instructions in the restraint systems section.
Enter date of installation.
Cutting line
Date of airbag Installation
The airbag is located behind the upholstered centre section of the steering wheel.
CAUTION:
injury hazard:
in appropriate or imprudent behaviour can result in injuries from the expanding airbag, which must inflate within milliseconds in the event of an accident.
The airbag can only provide the protection for which it was designed when all vehicle occupants wear correctly fastened seatbelts at all times,
The airbag provides supplementary protection; however, to avoid the risk of injury from the expanding airbag, observe the following precautions:
Select a seat position that is no closer to the airbag than necessary.
Do not lean forward whllst driving.
Always hold the steering wheel by the rim to avoid obstructing the airbag during expansion.
Never attach objects to the airbag; never allow any objects to ride between the airbag and the driver.
Once the airbag has been triggered, avoid touching hot components.
The airbag must always be replaced after having been triggered in an accident
Do not cover or re-upholster the steering wheel centre section, and do not attach stickers or similar objects, as this could impair proper operation of the airbag.
Never attempt to modify any components in the restraint system or in the attendant wiring.
Copy this loose sheet on the driver's airbag, cut out along the cutting lines, attach and add to the customer operating instructions in the restraint systems section.

It is essential that specific safety precautions be observed for airbag unit disposal. The corresponding regulations are available at any Mercedes Benz Service station.
The airbag has a limited service life, generally in the order of 15 years.
In the interest of continued safety. we strongly recommend that you have the airbag replaced at a Mercedes Benz Service station after 15 years at the latest.
When the vehicle is sold, the owner is obligated to call the purchaser's attention to the points listed above. This obligation is discharged by providing the owner's manual with the vehicle.
The airbag is designed to inflate in response to a frontal impact. The impact must attain a specific predetermined intensity to activate the airbag.
Small amounts of smoke are released when the airbag is activated. This smoke poses no threat to health, and is not caused by a fire in the vehicle.
In the course of rapid expansion, the fabric of the airbag may cause minor abrasions on the skin of hands and face.
An accident will not trigger the airbag unless accompanied by substantial forces at the front of the vehicle. In minor impacts the driver, along with the other vehicle occupants. is protected by the seatbelts in the usual manner.
SRS indicator lamp (Supplemental Restraint System)
When the key in the steering lock is turned to position 1 or 2, the indicator lamp in the instrument cluster lights up for approximately 4 seconds to indicate that the airbag is ready for operation.
Should the lamp fail to light up, if it remains on or blinks. or if it comes or during normal vehicle operation, this indicates a fault in the system. The airbag could fail to operate in the event of an accident. Should any of these symptoms occur, have the system checked at a Mercedes Benz Service Station as soon as possible.
