1 Ignition switch in driving position (position "2") and when starting the engine
1.1 ABS/ESP/4-ETS warning lamp (A1e36) and ABS indicator lamp (A1e17) come on and turn off again
^ The ABS/ESP/4-ETS warning lamp (A1e36) and the ABS indicator lamp (A1e17) come on in the instrument cluster (A1) when the ignition key is turned to the driving position. Both lamps turn off when the engine has been started.
This indicates that the ESP is operational.
2 When driving
2.1 ABS/ESP/4-ETS warning lamp (A1e36) switched off
^ The ABS/ESP/4-ETS warning lamp (A1e36) remains off when the ESP control mode is not active (because a wheel has not exceeded the grip limit).
2.2 ABS/ESP/4-ETS warning lamp (A1e36) flashes
^ The ABS/ESP/4-ETS warning lamp (A1e36) flashes
- when the ESP control mode is active because at least one wheel has exceeded the grip limit,
- when the driver switches off the ESP by pressing the "ESP OFF" switch (S76/6)" while the limited ESP control mode is active
- because one wheel has exceeded the grip limit when the vehicle is moving off at a speed below approx. 60 km/h (ESP braking torque control with single-sided brake application),
- or because at least one wheel has exceeded the grip limit when braking (normal ESP braking torque control).
Limited ESP control mode:
The ASR drive torque control is no longer available and the normal ESP braking torque control is switched off when the vehicle accelerates and when rolling.
2.3 ABS/ESP/4-ETS warning lamp (A1e36) comes on and stays on
^ The ABS/ESP/4-ETS warning lamp (A1e36) comes on and stays on if the ESP is not available. This is the case if
- the driver presses the "ESP OFF" switch (S76/6)" and the limited ESP control mode is not active,
- the differential locks are activated,
- or an ESP system error occurs, e.g. a fault in the ESP and BAS control module (N47-5).
The brake system continues to function normally.
2.4 ABS indicator lamp (A1e17) comes on and stays on
^ The ABS indicator lamp (A1e17) comes on and stays on when
- the differential locks are activated,
- or the ESP is deactivated because the ABS is deactivated,
- due to an operational problem with the ABS
- or due to an undervoltage for the ABS voltage supply.
The brake system continues to function normally.
2.5 Multifunction display (A1p13)
^ If the ESP is not available if the
- differential locks are activated
- or due to an operational problem with the ESP, ABS or BAS a message appears in the multifunction display (A1p13) together with the "ESP" symbol.
