Constant position finding, function
Refers to computation of current vehicle position.
It is active when the ignition is switched on and is performed by the navigation computer, which is integrated into the COMAND operating, display and control module (A40/3).
During the switch-on phase (software is loaded), only basic map matching is available.
After switching off the ignition all the essential localization parameters are stored for the duration of the overrun period (approx. 30 min).
Constant position finding employs three procedures, which mutually supplement one another and thereby guarantee very accurate and reliable position finding:
- Basic map matching (composite positioning)
- Map-assisted position finding (map matching)
- GPS position finding
Manual entry of vehicle location
It is possible to enter the position of the vehicle on the control and display system.
This may be of use in the following situations:
- Following transportation of the vehicle
(e.g. by ferry or train) or
- if GPS reception was not possible at the start of the journey
