GF91.60-P-4003-02GHA Passenger Airbag - Function
Operation
- The restraint systems control module (N2/7) delivers an electrical ignition pulse to either one or both of the hybrid inflator detonators (R12/4, R12/5), depending on the severity of the impact. The type of crash involved determines whether the detonators are ignited simultaneously or in stages.
- The detonator is triggered, thereby igniting the (non-azide) solid propellant. This creates high pressure which is transferred to the inert gas mixture.
- As the gas flows into the bag under high pressure, the bag rapidly inflates, tearing open the airbag housing and thrusting through the dashboard cover into the passenger compartment.
- The airbag attains its maximum volume of around 125 liters within approximately 40 msec.
- The bag begins to deflate immediately after reaching its maximum volume. The gas escapes from the airbag through a filter and the airbag collapses.
Disposal
As it is not possible to determine whether both detonators were ignited during deployment, proper airbag disposal is essential. In Germany airbag disposal is possible through the Mercedes-Benz Recycling System, or "MeRSy". In all other countries, please observe applicable regulations.
