1 Mount the dial indicator holder with dial indicator on the axle housing so that the tracer pin of the dial indicator contacts the tooth flank at a right angle.
2 Check the gear backlash by moving the ring gear to and fro.
This procedure should be repeated on at least 4 positions on the circumference of the ring gear.

The gear backlash is changed by replacing the shims between the axle housing and bearing.
If a thinner shim is installed on one side, then a shim which is thicker to the same extent must be installed on the opposite side, in order to retain the bearing preload.
