Diagnosis - function check

Bulbs
^ Turn starter switch to position "2", all indicator and malfunction indicator lamps should come on.
^ Start engine, at an engine speed of > 480 rpm all indicator and malfunction indicator lamps should go out if the systems are functioning properly.
^ The following go out regardless of the engine operation:
SRS malfunction indicator lamp after approximately 4 s
Seat belt warning lamp (USA), (AUS), (CON), (J), (SA) and Korea after approximately 6 s

Note:
If individual indicator or malfunction indicator lamps do not go out or come on during operation, check the affected systems and correct fluid levels.

Warning buzzer
^ Light warning and parking brake warning
^ Key warning (USA)
^ Seat belt warning for approx. 6 s (USA), (CON), (J) and Korea for approx. 12 s (SA)
The warning tone is interrupted as soon as the seat belt is buckled.
^ Speed warning (SA) > 120 km/h
^ In addition the symbol for speed warning appears on the instrument cluster with multifunction display
^ On vehicles with diesel engine an additional warning tone sounds in the event of EBV failure as soon as the stop lamp switch is actuated. (Only above speed of 40 km/h)

Display instruments
The display instruments should read according to the operating conditions.

Phototransistor
Illuminate phototransistor with flashlight (23 fig 2).
The display illumination for the LCD displays (outdoor temperature, trip odometer, odometer and electronic clock) should become brighter.

Note:
Instrument cluster with multifunction display
In the event of malfunctions (e.g. brake linings worn, coolant level too low, etc.) or system malfunctions (malfunction in anti-lock brake system, in supplementary restraint system) a warning display with warning text is shown instead of the outside temperature, trip odometer, odometer and electronic clock. The warning texts are displayed in yellow or red depending on the malfunction and a warning tone also sounds.

Instrument cluster with CAN (diesel only)
463 models with diesel engine have an instrument cluster with CAN bus.
The signals for the speed, rpm, coolant temperature, etc. are transmitted via the CAN bus.
