Location
The emissions sensor is installed on the right firewall.

Task
The values of the emissions sensor are processed by the front air conditioning. It senses the concentration of the air pollutants carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide. The comfort AAC [KLA] control and operating unit (N22/7) uses the measured values of the emissions sensor to control the recirculated air. If the air pollutant concentration is too high, only the inside air is recirculated and the supply of outside air is prevented.

This function is not available with A/C OFF.

Function
The emissions sensor operates reactively:
The air recirculation flap is not closed until after the sensor has detected an increase of the CO and NO x values. Although this only takes a few seconds, part of the pollutants might have already reached the interior compartment during this time. To prevent this from happening, the activated charcoal filter retains the pollutants until the recirculation door is closed.
