Component Identification:

The first differential is located at the back of the transfer case. A further differential each is located in the front axle gear and the rear axle differential.

Task
The differentials enable the wheel speed differences in the drive train between the:
^ front axle and rear axle,
^ driven wheels on the front axle,
^ driven wheels on the rear axle to be balanced.

Function
In the event of different rotational speeds between the differential side gears (3), the differential pinion gears (4) rotate on their axles mounted in the differential housing (2). The differential pinion gears roll over the differential side gears rotating at different speeds.

This compensates for the differences in rotational speed.
