Making phone calls
The user can make a telephone call in the vehicle using the portable CTEL (A34/6). To be able to utilize this function, the user must connect a portable CTEL that is compatible with the Japanese mobile phone system to the preinstalled standard PDC plug (portable CTEL separation point (X39/37)) in the telephone slot of the center console.

The PDC plug is mounted under the armrest and connects the portable CTEL over an "NTT-DoCoMo interface" directly to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3).

The display and selection are performed using the COMAND operating, display and control unit, the portable CTEL or the instrument cluster (A1).
The telephone is switched on automatically via the TEL button on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The COMAND operating, display and control unit stores and manages the telephone books and also administers the e-mail data.

Next to the telephone functions the "i-mode" service functions are also available. Here the driver can use the portable CTEL in the hands-free mode only. "Private Mode" is not available with the portable CTEL plugged in.

Telephone calls via the voice control system (VCS [SBS])
It is possible for the user to control all telephone functions via the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) integrated in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The voice control system (VCS [SBS]) is switched on and off by means of the VCS [SBS] on button (S111s4) and VCS [SBS] off button (S110s4), respectively.

A phonetic transcription of the name is stored along with the number and name in the telephone book. If the phone directory is transferred from the portable CTEL to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, all the directory entries are available immediately, also for the voice control system. The voice control system (VCS [SBS]) only supports the Japanese language.

i-Mode
The user can access the Internet using the portable CTEL. For this purpose a PDC mobile phone is required. To be able to use the i-mode system which is widely available in Japan, the portable CTEL must also support the i-mode data exchange log. (DoCoMo i-Navi Link portable CTEL).

The Internet functionalities (operation, management, display, etc.) are processed in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

E-mail
Using the plugged-in portable CTEL and the data configured in the Provider setup it is possible to send and receive e-mails. The user can operate the system using the COMAND operating, display and control unit.

While the familiar e-mail system is managed with POP3 and SMTP servers, e-mails that are sent with i-mode are routed over a special i-mode mail server. For this reason, these e-mails are managed separately from the other ones.

It is not possible to attach files to an e-mail, nor is it possible to read and accept a URL in an e-mail.
