The distance warning system is an additional function of DISTRONIC. It warns the driver in the speed range 30 km/hour up to the maximum speed (max. 250 km/hour) of moving or stationary obstacles (vehicles) on his lane.
Activation/deactivation
Independently of the DISTRONIC distance control, the driver can activate or deactivate the distance warning system separately via the left or right switch group on the multifunction steering wheel (S110, S111) in the menu of the instrument cluster (A1). The distance warning system is dependent here on the function (function requirements) of the radar sensor system.
If the distance warning is activated the symbol for the distance warning lights up in the lower multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster.
The distance warning is triggered whenever a deceleration >6 m/s2 of one's own vehicle is necessary in order to avoid a collision. The distance warning is given by the DTR warning lamp red triangle and an intermittent acoustic signal.
In the upper multifunction display of the instrument cluster, the driver's vehicle, the set target distance and the vehicle ahead, with its current distance, are all displayed.
Except USA
As an additional function, the driver is alerted when his vehicle remains in further away than 300 meters at a distance of less then 0.9 s to the vehicle ahead. Here the DTR warning lamp is illuminated until the correct distance is reestablished.
Thus it should be possible for the driver to avoid a fine, circumstances permitting (due to non-observance of the minimum distance).
The distance warning system does not perform any control functions by itself, such as braking the vehicle.
