Radio
The roof antenna module (A2/93) filters the amplitude modulation (AM) and frequency modulation (FM) signals, amplifies them, and relays them to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3). The AM and FM signals (also containing the weatherband (WB)), are demodulated in the radio receiver stage for FM and AM, the information signal is amplified and output via the vehicle speaker.
With code (810) Sound system, the audio signals are digitized and transmitted by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the amplifier for sound system (N40/3).
There, the audio signals are processed, amplified and then output to the vehicle speaker.
Weather band
The weatherband channel is a free information channel which can be received anywhere in the country offering additional regional information such as weather forecasts, weather warnings and warnings of other hazards. The weatherband consists of a national network of radio stations which continually broadcast information. The network for this generally accessible service was put into operation by the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and today, is controlled by the USA Federal Government. This service is broadcast on 7 FM radio frequencies.
Radio functions
^ Receiver for FM and AM signals of radio stations (reception of LW and SW stations not possible)
^ AM interference suppression
^ Generation of the signal for the intermediate frequency (IF [ZF]) feedback, for activating the diversity processor in the roof antenna module, only in the FM band
^ Multipath suppression
^ Storage (manual) for a maximum of 10 stations in each radio band. Only the station frequencies are indicated on the display.
^ Automatic stereo/mono switchover
^ SCAN (each radio station stored is played for 8 s)
^ SEEK (automatic station search)
^ Tune (manual tuning)
^ Selection of desired radio station with control buttons (hard keys)
^ Last mode (the radio station last switched on before switching off and then switching COMAND operating, display and controller unit back on)
Control function FM/AM/Weatherband (WB)
One display each is present for FM/AM and WB. These displays can be selected in the audio menu with the aid of the softkeys for the left multifunction keys. Pressing the "AM/FM" soft key switches over between FM and AM.
Satellite Digital Audio Radio (SDAR) (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio)
The receiver system consists of the SDAR control unit (N87/5) and the SDAR antenna (A2/93a5), which is integrated in the roof antenna module. The SDAR control unit is connected to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via MOST.
The SIRIUS preview channel is displayed to the user when the "SAT" control button (hard key) is pressed. It is the only digital radio station that can be received free of charge.
Since modification year 07/1, the SDAR control unit (3rd generation) has been used; it is now also available for vehicles with code (460) Additional parts, Canadian vehicles. The properties of the SDAR control unit (3rd generation) differ from the those of the preceding generations in the following:
^ Shorter response times
^ Improved reception properties
^ Temperature and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) properties have been optimized
If the full radio program subject to fees is desired by the user, it is necessary for the user to first register with a provider.
Users can view the data required for approval by pressing the softkey "Service" in the basic SAT menu.
This information includes:
^ Telephone number of the provider e.g. "Call 88-539-7474"
^ 12-digit electronic serial number (ESN) of the installed SDAR control unit, e.g. "000308380309"
After successful identification, the receiver system is activated by the provider via satellite. Then, all available 100 satellite stations are available to the user. The maximum number of stations that can be received is 224.
The receivable digital radio stations are classified according to the following music styles and supplementary categories:
^ POP
^ ROCK
^ COUNTRY
^ HIPHOP
^ R&B
^ DANCE
^ JAZZ
^ CLASSICAL
^ VARIETY
^ NEWS
^ SPORTS
^ ENTERTAINMENT
^ all
The categories can be selected by the user with the horizontal motion buttons on the joystick. Scrolling in the selected music category is possible with the vertical motion buttons.
Playing audio CDs
The single CD drive behind the hinged color display on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and the CD changer (A2/6) (with code (819) 6-disk CD changer) can play CD audio media. Both units support processing of CD text information. A mechanism allows the color display on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to be moved downward so that the CD slot is accessible for the user. The "Disk Eject" button is located behind the display.
The single CD drive in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and the CD changer have different menus.
On vehicles with code (530) COMAND APS USA (with navigation system), the DVD drive is not suitable for playing video media such as DVD Video and CD video.
The following can be controlled with the menu:
^ Track Mix
^ Repeat
^ Skip title (forward/back)
^ Manual title entry
^ Stop
^ Play
^ Title search forward/back
^ Automatic CD reload, when CD has not been removed from the slot after approx. 20 s
Display of:
^ Time, track and number of all music tracks
^ Track number of music track currently being played
^ Repeat status, track switch, play switch and random play switch
An external analog audio source can be connected to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the AUX jack in the glove box. Data exchange via a discrete line.
Component Identification:
Audio output in rear
If the vehicle is equipped with an audio output in the rear, it is possible to output audio signals via headphone connections on the rear control panel control unit (with code (519) Rear audio system). The audio signals are transferred from the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to the rear audio control unit (N66/8) by direct wiring. There, the audio signals are amplified and transmitted to the rear control panel control unit f or output via headphones. The volume for the headphones can be adjusted on the rear control panel control unit.
The audio source can be selected on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The rear audio output is switched off at the factory. The menu for the rear audio output can be opened in the audio menu by pressing the "Rear" soft key. The audio source for the rear can be selected with this menu. It is not necessary for the audio source for the rea to be the same as that for the front.
Use only headphones with an internal resistance of 32 Ohms.
The audio functions can be operated via the system selection buttons (S110s3) and scroll forward/back buttons (S110s1) of the multifunction steering wheel (MFL).
The signals are transmitted via:
^ Local Interconnect Network (LIN)
^ Steering column module (N80)
^ Controller Area Network bus, class C (engine compartment) (CAN C)
^ Central gateway control unit (N93)
^ Controller area network bus class B (interior compartment) (CAN B)
^ Instrument cluster (A1)
^ COMAND operating, display and controller unit
Display in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster
The audio displays appear in the instrument cluster multifunction display only when the COMAND operating, display and controller unit is switched on.
