GF00.20-P-2009RT Engine Oil Monitoring, Function
- MODEL 251.0 /1 with ENGINE 113.971 up to Model Year 8

General information
The oil level is monitored constantly by the oil sensor (oil level, temperature and quality, B40), and the corresponding data is passed on to ASSYST.
Oil top-ups can be detected, and result in a quantity rebate, which correspondingly extends the service interval.
Oil overfillings or missing oil quantities are displayed via the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1).

Oil warnings are displayed:
- Automatically, but t = 60 s after engine start at the earliest, and with an oil temperature greater than 60 °C/140 °F.
- In the event of oil overfilling, the oil can symbol and the message "Reduce engine oil level!" appear in the multifunction display. A brief warning tone is additionally sounded.
- In the event of poor oil condition (water in the oil), the oil can symbol and the message "Engine oil level - visit workshop!" appear in the multifunction display.
A brief warning tone is additionally sounded.
- In the event of critical oil starvation, the oil can symbol and the message "Engine oil level - visit workshop!" appear in the multifunction display.
- If the oil level has fallen to its minimum level, the oil can symbol and the message "Engine oil level: at refueling stop, top up with 1 l or 1 quart of engine oil!" appear in the multifunction display.
A brief warning tone is additionally sounded.
- In the event of severe oil loss (hole in oil pan), the oil can symbol and the message "Engine oil level, Stop; Engine off!" appear in the multifunction display. In addition, a warning tone is sounded.

Display of the oil quantity:
- Automatically t = 5 s after ignition, "circuit 15 ON", if the oil level has fallen to a damaging level for the engine, the oil can symbol and the message: "Engine oil level, Stop: Engine off!" are displayed. In addition, a warning tone is sounded.

Procedure for displaying the oil quantity:
Turn transmitter key (A8/1) to position "Circuit 15 ON" in EIS control unit (N73).
- Press the System selection button (S110s3) on the multifunction steering wheel repeatedly until the temperature display and trip odometer appear in the multifunction display.
- Press the Scroll forward/back button (S110s1) repeatedly until the message: "Engine oil level measurement in progress!" appears in the multifunction display Measurement is correct only when vehicle is on level ground".
- If the measurement is not interrupted, t = 3 s, the message "Engine oil level measurement in progress!" appears in the multifunction display.

The following messages may now appear in the multifunction display:
- "Engine oil level OK"
- "Engine oil level, reduce oil level"
- "Top up engine oil level with 1.0 l/1.0 quart"
- "Top up engine oil level with 1.5 l/1.5 quarts"
- "Top up engine oil level with 2.0 l/2.0 quarts"

The quantity of oil to be replenished can be specified in liters (L) or quarts (Q) depending on the national version.

The missing quantity of oil which is displayed is no longer changed during the display. A change in the oil level cannot therefore be directly observed in the display. The new oil level is only displayed as described below.

Waiting time
Measuring the oil level is only possible following the expiration of a waiting time following engine "OFF". If the driver attempts to call up the oil level while engine is "ON", the message "Engine oil level not available during engine operation" appears in the multifunction display.

The waiting time following engine "OFF" depends on the engine oil temperature. This is:
- Up to 20 °C/68 °F t = 0 min.
- From 60 °C/140 °F t = 1 min.

If the message "Observe waiting time!" is displayed, the waiting time previously stipulated was not observed.
In the case of other temperatures, the waiting time assumes corresponding intermediate values.

Display in the event of measuring system errors In the event of a measuring system error, e.g. in the event of an oil sensor error (oil level, temperature and quality), the oil can symbol and the message "Engine oil level - visit workshop!" appear at the earliest t = 30 s after the occurrence of the error.
For the diagnosis, the central gateway control unit (N93) is also read out using STAR DIAGNOSIS. The central gateway control unit receives the sensor data from the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) via engine compartment CAN (CAN-C).

Replenishment recognition
The last 10 top-up quantities and the corresponding kilometer readings of the current interval can be called up with STAR DIAGNOSIS.
Refill recognition is normally indicated in the instrument cluster by an extension of the remaining distance.
Oil top-ups are only basically recognized if the following conditions are fulfilled:
- The minimum top-up quantity is 0.5 l/0.5 quarts.
- Following an oil refill, a distance of at least 5 km/3 miles must be driven under normal driving conditions with an oil temperature of at least 70 °C 158 °F.

Oil change
An oil change may only be confirmed in conjunction with the total service. Resetting can be carried out via the instrument cluster or via STAR DIAGNOSIS.

On resetting, the following data are stored:
- Current kilometer reading/mileage rounded to nearest 100
- Total of top-up quantities in the last interval
- Remaining distance
- Remaining time Product of quality factors

The data for the last 5 resets are stored in ASSYST.
These data can only be read out with STAR DIAGNOSIS.
