Replacement light function
If specific lights malfunction, then other lights are actuated as substitutes by pulse width modulation (to adapt the light output). In such an instance, flashing functions have priority over steady light.
An active automatic lamp substitution function is communicated to the driver via the instrument cluster (A1) by the front signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) (N10/1) or the rear signal acquisition and actuation module (SAM) (N10/2).
The scope of the substitute lamp actuation is country specific (refer to following table).

Function sequence for emergency light function
The emergency light function serves to prevent the complete vehicle lighting system at the front or rear failing because of a single error (e.g. processor fault).
For this reason, the front SAM and rear SAM have separate hardware which guarantees the emergency light function.
The front SAM switches on the following:
^ Left standing and parking lights and right standing and parking lights
^ Via the xenon headlamp control units (E1n1, E2n1) the left xenon bulb (E1e8) and the right xenon bulb (E2e8)
The rear SAM switches on the following:
^ Left taillight and parking light and right taillight and parking light
^ Left license plate lamp (E19/1) and right license plate lamp (E19/2)
