Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
Component Description For The Crankshaft Position Sensor
Component Identification:
Location
The crankshaft position sensor is located behind the left cylinder bank.
Component Identification:
Task
The crankshaft position sensor records the crankshaft position via the teeth of the drive plate (incremental wheel) without any contact and detects the engine speed.
Design
It consists of a plastic housing with an internal inductive coil and a 2- pole plug contact.
- The distance between the crankshaft position sensor and the teeth of the drive plate is specified by the installation position (approximately 0.8 mm).
Function
The leading edge (a) of a tooth generates a positive voltage pulse, whereas the trailing edge (b) generates a negative voltage pulse.
The distance from the positive to the negative voltage peak equals the length of a tooth. The gap (c) produced by 2 missing teeth results in no voltage being generated in the crankshaft position sensor . This gap is used for detecting the TDC position of cylinder 1 and 6.
