ESP Visit Workshop Displayed in Instrument Cluster

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles where the following situation occurs, this may be caused by the exposure of an unplugged connector for Distronic (located in the front end of the vehicle near the radiator). This may cause water to enter resulting in a short circuit between CAN high and CAN low.

1. The fault message "ESP faulty - Visit workshop" appears in the instrument cluster and the ESP warning lamp is illuminated.

2. The fault message disappears after restarting the ignition.

3. After restart, the fault message ESP Not Available, See Owner's Manual" may appear; however, the message disappears after completing the first gentle curve at a speed greater than 6 mph.

Perform the following steps to resolve.

1. Locate the unplugged connector for Distronic (Figure 1).

2. Cut off the connector and insulate the wires with heat-shrinkable tube.

3. Fix the lines to the wiring harness using fabric tape.

Note:
Any of the ESP fault codes shown may be stored in conjunction with this issue.
