GF91.60-P-4040RT Rear Sidebag Component Description

Component Identification:

The sidebag left/right 2nd seat row sidebag with the left 2nd row sidebag squib or right 2nd row sidebag squib is located in each respective lateral support cushion for the left/right 2nd seat row and protects the rear compartment passengers from injury in the event of a side collision in the area of the door and C-pillar.

The sidebag unit is located in a housing, which contains the folded airbag, gas generator and squib.

Located on the front side of the housing is a predetermined fracture point to allow the airbag to expand. The electrical connection for the squib is located at the rear of the housing.

Function
In the event of a side collision the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) uses the driver sidebag sensor (A53) or front passenger sidebag sensor (A54) to measure the acceleration in the area of the B-pillar.

If the triggering threshold is exceeded then the relevant sidebag is actuated by an electrical ignition pulse.

The squib ignites the solid fuel in a fuel chamber.

The solid fuel is burned off. A bursting disk then fractures and the compressed gas escapes from the pressure container whereupon it is routed over exhaust vents into the airbag.

As the gas flows into the bag under pressure, the airbag rapidly inflates, tearing open the sidebag housing and thrusting through the seam in the lateral support cushion and into the passenger compartment. The airbag reaches its full volume within approximately 20 milliseconds.

The bag begins to deflate immediately after reaching its maximum volume. The gas escapes over a filter. The sidebag collapses.
