Located on the steering column are the steering column in/out motor (M20/1) and steering column up/down motor (M20/2) each with a Hall sensor.

Blockage is detected when no steering column position change is detected by the Hall sensors when a manual adjustment request is made using the steering column adjustment switch (S59) or steering column adjustment/steering wheel heater switch (S59/1) (only 164.8 with steering wheel heater, code 443) or while a stored position is being set. In this case, the driver front seat adjustment control unit with memory (N32/1) switches off the corresponding motor after 2 s.

Readjustment in the opposite direction is possible immediately. Readjustment in the same adjustment direction is not possible until the steering column adjustment switch or steering column adjustment/steering wheel heater switch is released for longer than 2 s.
