General information
The instrument cluster (A1) serves to display all dynamic and static vehicle conditions and driver information of the systems fitted to the vehicle
Warnings in the event of faulty or safety-relevant vehicle functions are also realized by the instrument cluster.
The following displays are incorporated in the instrument cluster in order to be able to convey information to the driver:
^ Permanent displays (e.g. vehicle speed, rotational speed, tank contents etc.)
^ Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue) (e.g. flasher, high beam etc.)
^ Warning lamps (red) (e.g. supplemental restraint system, seat belt, parking brake)

The instrument cluster makes possible the following functions:
^ Activate instrument cluster
^ Indicator lamp test
Furthermore, the following function sequences are possible which are described separately in the corresponding partial functions:
^ Indicator/warning messages
^ Display operating conditions
^ Comfort displays
^ Workshop level settings

Activate instrument cluster function sequence
The following activities or condition changes activate the instrument cluster:
^ Driver door open or closed
^ Standing lights ON
^ As of circuit 15R ON
^ Pressing the instrument illumination variable resistor (A1r1)
^ Unlocking the vehicle with the transmitter key (A8/1) (when ambient illumination is activated)

Additional function requirements for indicator lamp test
^ Circuit 15 ON

Indicator lamp test function sequence
The indicator lamp test is used for performing a function test on specific instrument cluster warning and indicator lamps.
The instrument cluster automatically performs the indicator lamp test each time circuit 15 is switched on.
The function of the following warning and indicator lamps is checked during the indicator lamp test:
- Fuel reserve warning light (A1e4)
- Brake fluid, parking brake and brake force distribution warning lamp (A1e7)
- Airbag indicator and warning light (A1e15)
- ABS indicator lamp (A1e17)
- ESP indicator lamp OFF (A1e30) (as of 1.9.10)
- ESP warning lamp (A1e41) (up to 31.8.10)
- Engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58)
- Tire pressure monitor warning lamp (A1e66) (for model 463.237/249/271 and model 463.202/222/236/248/270/303/306/336/340/341/346 with code (RY6) Tire pressure monitor (TPM))
- Low beam indicator lamp (A1e67)
The indicator lamp test is interrupted when the engine is started (circuit 61 ON).
The function of the following warning and indicator lamps is not checked during the indicator lamp test:
- Left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e1)
- Right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e2)
- High beam indicator lamp (A1e3)
- Seat belt warning lamp (A1e9)
- Preglow indicator lamp (A1e16) (with diesel engine)
