General information on mobile phone system
The control description comprises the following subfunctions:
- Establishing a telephone connection - making a call
- Establishing a telephone connection - receiving a call
- Hands-free mode
- Private mode
- Ending, aborting, or rejecting a call
- Further telephone functions
The system is described using a mobile phone connected to the cell phone separation point (X39/37) and the mobile phone adapter cable as an example. Deviations from this are indicated with the symbol.
A bluetooth-compatible mobile phone can only be operated in the vehicle when a mobile phone is not connected to the cell phone separation point or the adapter cable.
In order to be able to operate a mobile phone in the vehicle that has Bluetooth capability and is authorized at the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3), the mobile phone must support Hands Free Profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. More information is available under:
With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, read access to the telephone book in the mobile phone is possible when the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Profile Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP).
Establishing a telephone connection - making a call
The following different ways of making a telephone call are available to the user: The telephone number can be selected from various lists and dialed automatically, however, the telephone number can also be entered manually with the telephone keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or with the buttons on the mobile phone. The "Establishing a telephone connection - making a call" partial function consists of the following subfunctions:
- Dialing using buttons on the mobile phone
- Dialing using the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Dialing over voice control with the voice control system (VCS)
- Dialing from the navigation mode
- Dialing over the Man Machine Interface (MMI) (keypad on COMAND operating, display and controller unit)
Dialing using buttons on the mobile phone
If dialing is accomplished with the buttons on the mobile phone, the telephone call is established in the hands-free mode.
With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, the phone call is completed in the "Private mode" if the mobile phone supports the Private mode" and the "Private mode" is activated.
Dialing via the multifunction steering wheel button group
The address book of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit is selected by pressing the system selection (S110s3) button via the selection menu in the instrument cluster (A1). The name of the person to be called can be selected by scrolling forward and back in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit address book using the forward and back (S110s1) button. The accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) can be used to establish the telephone call in the handsfree system.
Dialing with voice control in the voice control system (VCS)
Voice control of the VCS [SBS] is activated by pressing the VCS [SBS] switch (S93/2). An acoustic signal is emitted after activation has taken place.
See the "Linguatronic operator's manual" for operation.
Dialing from the navigation mode
If a telephone number is stored for the point of interest (POI) entry, the user can dial it. The telephone call is then established in hands- free mode.
Dialing with the MMI (keypad on COMAND operating, display and controller unit)
The telephone function of the MMI is selected via the "Telephone (Tel)" base function, using the "Tel" hardkey on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, or via the "Tel" menu item in the application bar, using the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, and then via the "Telephone" menu item in the function bar.
The following ways of dialing a telephone number are available to the user here:
- Enter telephone number with keypad on COMAND operating, display and controller unit directly or with the speller offered
- Search for the telephone number using the "Address book" menu entry in the address book
- Search for the telephone number using the menu entry "Call lists" in the call lists (accepted, dialed)
The name of the person who you wish to call can be selected in the address book and the call lists by scrolling up and down. The call is activated with the "SEND" function or by pressing the "Accept phone call" button.
Establishing a telephone connection - receiving a call
The mobile phone receives a call signal from the telephone and fax antenna (A2/22). The calling party is indicated in the mobile phone display and, simultaneously, this information is transferred to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the communications control unit (N123/6).
The caller identification is displayed by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit on the screen of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
Additionally, the caller identification is shown in the mobile phone display and in the instrument cluster display.
The phone call can be accepted on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit keypad or on the multifunction steering wheel button group.
Hands-free mode
Accepting a call by:
- Pressing the accept and terminate phone call button
- Pressing the "Accept phone call" button on the mobile phone
- Pressing the "Accept phone call" button on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Selecting the corresponding option using the keypad of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit
The hands-free system is active as a standard feature when a telephone connection is established.
Voice input is made over the handsfree system microphone group A67b1). The microphones in the hands-free system microphone group are connected directly to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. Voice output is sent to the speakers installed in the vehicle.
Private mode
When in "Private mode", the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. This is possible by separating the mobile phone from the adapter cable during a telephone call in the hands-free mode and therefore separating it from the communications control unit. The phone call is retained on the mobile phone and can be continued on this. It is possible to continue a telephone call already established in the hands-free mode when the mobile phone is reconnected to the adapter cable and therefore to the communications control unit.
With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, the phone call is completed in the "Private mode" if the mobile phone supports the "Private mode" and the "Private mode" is activated.
Ending, aborting, or rejecting a call
The user can terminate the telephone call or reject an incoming call at any time. The user has the following options for terminating or rejecting the connection:
- Pressing the "END" button on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:
- Pressing the "END" button once to place the call on hold
- Pressing the "END" button twice to reject the call
- Pressing the accept and terminate phone call button
- Selecting the "END" function in the Telephony "Tel" base function using the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Pressing the "END" button on the mobile phone
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit then separates the connection.
Further telephone functions
The "other telephone functions" are subdivided into the following subfunctions:
- Toggling
- Bluetooth
Toggling
The user can switch back and forth between telephone calls with two people. While the user talks to one person on the line, the connection to the other is put on hold. However, voice transmission is interrupted.
If another call comes in while a call in already in progress, it is displayed on the screen of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The telephone call can then be accepted or rejected.
If the incoming call is accepted, it becomes active and the existing call is put on hold. If the incoming telephone is rejected, only the current telephone call is maintained.
Switching over between two existing telephone calls is possible with the "SEND" button on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or the accept/terminate phone call button.
Bluetooth
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit supports the standard Bluetooth network technology for easy and rapid integration of mobile phones in the vehicle. Bluetooth is a worldwide open standard for connecting Bluetooth devices (e.g. mobile phones) wirelessly and is based on radio technology in the 2.4 GHz range. One advantage of Bluetooth, next to the wide availability of Bluetooth devices, is the uncomplicated and spontaneous connection of Bluetooth devices to a Bluetooth network (ad-hoc network).
The extremely high data security (128-bit encoding) and the relatively limited radius (approx. 10 m) of such a Bluetooth network is what makes the use of Bluetooth in the vehicle interesting.
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit can integrate mobile phones of the latest generation into the vehicle hierarchy using the Bluetooth interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna (A2/91).
If a mobile phone is not yet authorized by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via Bluetooth, it is possible to search for Bluetooth-capable devices using the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and the display on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
If Bluetooth devices were found, the user is notified of all the Bluetooth devices listed in terms of trustworthiness ("trust" or "untrust"). The user can then authorize available Bluetooth devices (log on), interrupt connections to trustworthy Bluetooth devices or deauthorize Bluetooth devices.
