Function requirements, general

Various mobile phones can be connected to the communications control unit over the cell phone separation point using the preinstalled adapter cable.
A bluetooth-compatible mobile phone can only be operated in the vehicle when a mobile phone is not connected to the cell phone separation point or the adapter cable.
In order to be able to operate a mobile phone in the vehicle that has Bluetooth capability and is authorized at the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, the mobile phone must support Hands Free Profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. For more information please visit:

With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, read access to the telephone book in the mobile phone is possible when the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth Profile Phonebook Access Profile (PBAP).
General information on establishing/terminating a telephone call
The mobile phone can be used by the user to initiate or terminate a telephone call to another person in the mobile phone system network or the fixed-line network.
The establish call and terminate telephone call function consists of the following subfunctions:

^ Function sequence, establish call via telephone buttons or keypad on COMAND operating, display and controller unit
^ Establish call function sequence via the left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group

The system is described using a mobile phone connected to the cell phone separation point and the mobile phone adapter cable as an example. Deviations from this are indicated with the symbol
Operating instructions
A telephone call can be established or terminated using the:
- Buttons on the mobile phone
- Telephone buttons or keypad on COMAND operating, display and controller unit
- Multifunction steering wheel button groups
- VCS [SBS] (only for establishing call)
Function sequence, establish call via mobile phone buttons
Dialing the telephone number using the buttons on the mobile phone or selecting the telephone number from the mobile phone's telephone book and pressing the "Accept call button" initiates the telephone call in hands-free mode.
The control signals from the mobile phone buttons are internally processed and forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the following route:
- Adapter cable
- CTEL separation point
- Direct line
- Communication control unit
- Direct line
With a mobile phone operating with Bluetooth, the control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally. They are not forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit. The telephone call is completed in the "Private mode" when the mobile phone supports the "Private mode" and "Private mode" is activated.
Function sequence, establish call via telephone buttons or keypad on COMAND operating, display and controller unit
After dialing the telephone number via the telephone buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and pressing the "Accept phone call" button or by selecting the telephone function via the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and then activating the "TRANSMIT" function, the telephone call is completed in hands-free mode. The "Telephone (Tel)" base function is activated using the "Tel" hard key on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or via the "Tel" menu item in the application bar using the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and is then displayed on the screen of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The following ways of dialing a telephone number are available to the user here:
- Enter telephone number with keypad on COMAND operating, display and controller unit directly or with the speller offered
- Search for the telephone number using the "Address book" menu entry in the address book
- Search for the telephone number using the menu entry "Call lists" in the call lists (accepted, dialed)
The name of the person who you wish to call can be selected in the address book and the call lists by scrolling up and down.
The control signals from the telephone buttons or the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are processed internally. The menu item is also displayed internally on the screen of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
Function sequence, establish call via multifunction steering wheel button groups
The address book of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit is selected by pressing the system selection (S110s3) button via the selection menu in the instrument cluster.
The name of the person to be called can be selected by scrolling forward and back in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit address book using the forward and back (S110s1) button.
The accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) can be used to establish the telephone call in the handsfree system.
The control signals from the multifunction steering wheel button group are forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit over the following components:
- Direct line
- LIN converter
- LIN
- Steering column module
- Interior CAN
Display in the instrument cluster is accomplished by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the interior CAN.
Function sequence, establish call via voice control system
Voice control of the VCS [SBS] is activated by pressing the VCS [SBS] switch.
The control signal from the VCS [SBS] switch is forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit over the following components:
- Direct line
- Steering column module
- Interior CAN
A signal tone is emitted after the voice control system has been activated.
The signal tone in vehicles with code (EU9) Surround sound system (harman/kardon Logic 7), is transmitted by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to the sound system amplifier via MOST.
From there, the signal tone is transmitted via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left rear loudspeaker
- Right rear loudspeaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Subwoofer
- Left cockpit tweeter
- Right cockpit tweeter
- Left rear door tweeter
- Right rear door tweeter
In vehicles without code (EU9) Surround sound system (harman/kardon Logic 7), the signal tone is transmitted by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to the following speakers via direct lines:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left rear loudspeaker
- Right rear loudspeaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Left cockpit tweeter
- Right cockpit tweeter
Now different voice commands can be used to search and select a telephone number.
The voice commands are registered by the hands-free system microphone group and forwarded via a direct line to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
The voice control of the voice control system (VCS) is used to establish the telephone call in the handsfree mode.
The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".
Function sequence, establish call via navigation mode
If a telephone number is stored for a point of interest (POI), the user can dial it using the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or by voice control on the VCS [SBS].
The telephone call is then established in hands-free mode. The control signals from the keypad on the COMAND operating, display hands and controller unit are processed internally.
The signals are transferred from the VCS [SBS] to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit over the same path as for "Function sequence, establish telephone call over VCS [SBS]".
Function sequence, establish call for phone call in handsfree mode
After the telephone call is established, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit transmits and receives the mobile phone signals and data via the following route:
- Direct line
- Communication control unit
- Direct line
- CTEL separation point
- Direct line
- Telephone and fax antenna
The voice input in the hands-free mode is received by the hands free system microphone group and transferred to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit over a direct line.
The voice output in vehicles with code (EU9) Surround sound system (harman/kardon Logic 7), is transmitted by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit to the sound system amplifier via MOST. From there, the voice output is transmitted via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left rear loudspeaker
- Right rear loudspeaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Subwoofer
- Left cockpit tweeter

With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit transmits or receives the mobile phone signals or data via the Bluetooth antenna and the mobile phone antenna, except when the telephone call is established using the mobile phone buttons. In the event of establishing a telephone call using the mobile phone buttons, the mobile phone transmits or receives the mobile phone signals or data directly via the mobile phone antenna. Voice input takes place using the microphone integrated into the mobile phone and voice output is emitted via the speakers integrated into the mobile phone ("Private mode").
In the "Private mode" the user can make a call without other passengers in the vehicle being able to participate in the conversation when the mobile phone supports the "Private mode" and the "Private mode" is activated.
Function sequence, terminate call via mobile phone buttons
Pressing the "QUIT" button on the mobile phone terminates the telephone call. The control signals from the mobile phone buttons are internally processed and forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the following route:
- Adapter cable
- CTEL separation point
- Direct line
- Communication control unit
- Direct line
With a mobile phone operating with Bluetooth, the control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally. They are not forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
Function sequence, terminate call via telephone buttons or keypad on COMAND operating, display and controller unit
The telephone call can be terminated by pressing the "END" button on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or activating the "END" function in the "Telephone (Tel)" base function. The control signals from the telephone buttons or the keypad on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit are processed internally.
Function sequence, terminate call via multifunction steering wheel button groups
The accept/terminate phone call button terminates the telephone call. The control signals from the multifunction steering wheel button group are forwarded to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit over the following components:
- Direct line
- LIN converter
- LIN
- Steering column module
- Interior CAN
Function sequence, call termination
After completing a telephone call, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit discontinues transmission or reception of the mobile phone signals and data. This is accomplished internally in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
With a mobile phone operated with Bluetooth, the COMAND operating, display and controller unit discontinues transmission or reception of the mobile phone signals and data in an internal control unit procedure except when a call is terminated using the buttons on the mobile phone.
When a telephone call is terminated using the mobile phone buttons, the mobile phone interrupts the transmission or reception of mobile phone signals or data. This process runs internally in the mobile phone.
