Depending on the equipment installed one of the following control units will be installed, hereafter referred to as the "audio unit":
- Radio (with code (EF5) MB Audio 20 CD radio, (NTG 2.5))
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit (with code (EU1) COMAND, APS)
Function requirements, general
^ Status of circuit 30 "ON" or circuit 15R "ON".
^ One mobile phone network is available in sufficient strength and quality
^ Mobile phone system operating error-free
^ Mobile phone and audio equipment switched on
^ Compatible mobile phone inserted into UPCI [UHI] cell phone holder, which is connected to the Bluetooth module
^ Correct Personal Identification Number (PIN) entered, if set on the mobile phone
^ Enabled Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card inserted in mobile phone
So that a bluetooth-capable mobile phone that is authorized on the audio equipment can be operated in the vehicle, the mobile phone must support the hands-free profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. More information is available under:

General information on short message service (SMS) function
The user has a facility for managing his text messages (e.g. reading or deleting) in the form of the Short Message Service (SMS) application. For this, the SMS messages previously received on the mobile phone as well as the new SMS messages are transmitted to the "audio unit".
The following SMS functions are possible:
- Receiving SMS
- Read SMS via the mobile phone screen and the display on the audio equipment
- Read SMS via display on audio equipment (without code (ZU8) USA version)
- Delete SMS
- Read SMS aloud ("Text to Speech", German or English)
- Mail inbox list of the 30 most recent SMS messages, sorted by date (choice of displaying either the sender or the start of the text for each SMS)
The "Short Message Service (SMS)" function consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Function sequence for loading present SMS to audio equipment

The SMS already stored in the mobile phone are transmitted from the mobile phone to the "audio control unit" in the following way:

Function sequence for receiving SMS message
Incoming SMS are received by the audio equipment via the following route:
- Telephone and fax antenna (except model 463.202/303 or with code (ZU8) USA version) or
- Radio and cell phone antenna (A28) (in model 463.202/303)
- Direct line
- Radio and cell phone antenna splitter (A28/1) (in model 463.202/303)
- Direct line
- E-net compensator
- Direct line
- UHI portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface)
- Bluetooth module
- Bluetooth antenna
Function sequence, call up messaging application
The SMS function for managing (e.g. reading or deleting) SMS messages is selected via the "Telephone (Tel)" base function, using the "Tel" hardkey on the audio equipment, or via the "Tel" menu item in the application bar, using the keypad on the audio equipment, and then via the "SMS" menu item in the function bar.
The SMS function is then shown on the display of the audio equipment. The control signals of the telephone keys and the keypad on the audio equipment are processed internally.
Function sequence for reading text messages
The SMS messages from the audio equipment are displayed on the display of the audio equipment. The keypad on the audio equipment is then used to call up the SMS entry in the function bar of the display on the audio equipment.
In vehicles without code (ZU8) USA version, the SMS messages from the audio equipment are displayed on the screen of the mobile phone via the following route:
- Direct line
- Bluetooth antenna
- Bluetooth module
- UHI portable CTEL holder (Universal Handy Interface)
Function sequence for composing and transmitting SMS message
It is only possible to read and transmit SMS messages via the buttons on the mobile phone.
The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally. The SMS is then sent to the recipient in the following way:

Function sequence for reading SMS message aloud
In vehicles with code (EU9) Surround sound system (harman/ kardon Logic 7), the voice output of the SMS messages is transmitted by the audio equipment to the sound system amplifier via MOST. From there, the voice output of the SMS messages is transmitted via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Subwoofer
- Left cockpit tweeter
- Right cockpit tweeter
- Left rear door tweeter
- Right rear door tweeter
In vehicles without code (EU9) Surround sound system (harman/kardon Logic 7), the voice output of the SMS messages is transmitted directly from the audio equipment via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Left cockpit tweeter
- Right cockpit tweeter
