Function requirements, general
^ Circuit 30 ON or circuit 15R ON
Depending on the equipment installed one of the following control units will be installed, hereafter referred to as the "audio unit":
- Radio (with code (EF5) MB Audio 20 CD radio, (NTG 2.5))
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit (with code (EU1) COMAND, APS)

Media interface, general
The media interface function enables the connection of the following portable end devices via an adapter cable, media interface connector 1, the media interface control unit and MOST to the audio equipment:
- AUX devices (class 1)
- iPod or serial universal serial bus (USB) devices (media transfer protocol) (class 2)
- Special USB devices (mass storage device) (class 3)
The AUX devices without operation are connected to the AUX jack. iPods are connected to the iPod connector. USB devices can be connected to the USB jack. MTP devices can be connected to the USB jack and AUX jack.
The conventional AUX jack installed in the glove box is eliminated.
As of 1.9.09 (without code (EF5) MB Audio 20 CD radio, (NTG 2.5):
With the audio source "AUX" (via media interface adapter cable (accessories)) the selections "Standard" and "Boost" are possible in the "Volume" menu. The input level can be increased by selecting "Boost".

Media interface operating instructions
The portable devices listed are controlled using one of the following controls:
- Buttons at audio equipment
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group
Menu guidance and graphic representation of the menu guidance occur on the display of the audio equipment and depend on the respective portable end device connected.

Function sequence for media interface
The media interface control unit is supplied with voltage via two direct lines (circuit 31 and circuit 30). If a portable device is connected, it is recognized by the media interface control unit via the following route:
- Adapter cable
- Media interface connector
The media interface control unit then sends an electrical wake-up signal to the audio equipment via a direct line. The audio equipment is switched on and simultaneously activates (wakes up) the MOST if the audio equipment has not yet been switched on by a previous action from another system.
Simultaneously the audio signals and data of the connected portable end device connected are transferred to the audio equipment via the following route:
- Adapter cable
- Media interface connector 1
- Media interface control unit
- MOST
The video signals and data are transferred from media interface connector 1 to the audio equipment via direct lines.
The user can now display the audio signals and data or video signals and data in the display of the audio equipment by selecting the menu item "Media Int." in the "Disk" menu as well as the respective submenu item "Media Int." or "Music". The video signals and data are transferred to the display of the audio equipment internally in the audio equipment.
The "Media Int." menu item in the "Disc" menu and the relevant submenu item are selected using one of the following controls:
- Control buttons on audio equipment
- Multifunction steering wheel button group
The control signals of the control buttons on the audio equipment are processed internally.
The control signals of the multifunction steering wheel button groups are forwarded to the audio equipment over the following route:
- Direct line
- LIN converter
- LIN
- Steering column tube module
- Interior CAN
Following evaluation of the control signals in the audio equipment, they are forwarded by the audio equipment to the connected portable end device via the following route:
- MOST
- Media interface control unit
- Media interface connector 1
- Adapter cable
The connected portable end device evaluates the control signals and sends the corresponding audio signals and data to the audio equipment via the following route:
- Adapter cable
- Media interface connector 1
- Media interface control unit
- MOST
The video signals and data are transferred by the media interface connector to the audio equipment via direct lines.
Showing the video signals and data on the display of the audio equipment is performed internally in the audio equipment.
The audio signals and data are output on vehicles with code (EU9)
Surround sound system (harman/kardon Logic 7) by the audio equipment via MOST to the sound system amplifier and from there via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Subwoofer speaker
- Left cockpit tweeter
- Right cockpit tweeter
- Left rear door tweeter
- Right rear door tweeter
On vehicles without code (EU9) Surround sound system (harman/ kardon Logic 7), the audio signals are output by the audio equipment via direct lines over the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left rear speaker
- Right rear speaker
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill)
- Left cockpit tweeter
- Right cockpit tweeter
