ME gasoline injection and ignition system (motor electronics) (ME), general points
The ME gasoline injection and ignition system is supplied by "Robert Bosch GmbH" and, when connected electrically to the sensors and actuators of engine 273, creates the engine control
The abbreviated designation "ME 9.7" means:
M = Motronic
E = Electronic accelerator
9.7 = Version 9.7
The whole engine control is located in the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10), which is subdivided in the following systems:
^ Basic functions
^ Engine system
^ Injection system
^ Ignition system
^ Exhaust system
The sensor data is read in directly and indirectly via the Control Area Network (data bus/CAN bus) (CAN) network by the engine control and the respective actors are actuated. The following functions and systems are controlled and coordinated:
Basic functions
- Control system diagnosis
- Fault memory
- On-board diagnosis II (OBD II)
- Diagnosis via CAN Control Area Network (data bus/CAN bus)
- CAN interconnection
- Flash programming
- Variant coding
- Drive authorization stage 3 (DAS 3)
- Torque interface
- Heat management
- Alternator interface
- Controlled intake/exhaust camshaft adjustment
- Maximum vehicle speed limit
Diagnosis:
For diagnostic purposes, the Diagnosis Assistance System (DAS) can be used to read out and delete the engine control fault codes, and to actuate certain specific diagnostic functions.
CAN network
The ME-SFI [ME] control unit exchanges data with other control units that are integrated into the CAN network via the connected drive train CAN (CAN-C)
Flash programming:
The engine control in the ME-SFI [ME] control unit is flash programmable, that is the complete software in the control unit can be replaced using the DAS (installed new). The software required to program the control units is provided on the STAR DIAGNOSIS DAS Update DVD.
Variant coding:
Using variant coding the following vehicle versions and equipment can be coded using the DAS:
- Vehicle model
- National version
- Exhaust variants
- Transmission version
- With or without catalytic converter
Engine system
- Start relay actuation
- Throttle flap control
- Fuel safety shutoff

- Electronic Stability Program (ESP) support
- Support for fully integrated transmission control (VGS)
- Starting torque limitation
- Suction fan actuation
- Calibration of throttle valve
- Intake manifold length switchover
- Tumble flap switchover
Injection system
