Automatic interior lights control in general
The automatic interior lights control implements the actuation of all components of the interior illumination as well as the warning and exit illumination.
The corresponding requests are generated automatically. The master control unit for the automatic interior lights control is the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1).
The automatic interior lights control feature consists of the following subfunctions:
^ Locator lighting function sequence
^ Function sequence for warning and exit illumination
^ Function sequence for load compartment illumination
^ Function sequence for interior illumination with ATA [EDW] alarm
(with code (551) Antitheft alarm system (ATA [EDW]))
^ Function sequence for interior illumination following an accident with airbag deployment
Additional function requirements for locator lighting
^ Light sensor (B38/1) (without code (345) Rain sensor) or rain/light sensor (B38/2) (with code (345) Rain sensor) signaling darkness
^ Vehicle unlocking via the central locking system (CL [ZV]) or
^ intentionally leaving the vehicle by removing the transmitter key (A8/1) from the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73)
Locator lighting function sequence
In order to control the locator lighting, the front SAM control unit reads in and evaluates in the following signals:
- Status of light sensor or rain/light sensor via the wiper/inside rearview mirror LIN (LIN 2)
- Status of central locking system and circuit 15 status, provided on the interior CAN (CAN-B) by the electronic ignition lock control unit.
The overhead control panel electronics (N70/3) are supplied with power via the front SAM control unit.
The following locator lighting components are therefore actuated indirectly by the front SAM control unit:
- Left front interior lamp (N70/3e4)
- Right front interior lamp (N70/3e5)
- Rear interior lamp (E15/3e3)
With model 204.0/2 with code (954) Avantgarde or code (955) Elegance and with model 204.9 with code (876) Interior lights package, the front SAM control unit also actuates the following components in accordance with the symbol illumination brightness setting:
- Right front footwell lamp (E17/15)
- Left front footwell lamp (E17/16)
If the function is requested by unlocking the central locking system, all the lamps are switched off after t = 40 s or immediately, if the vehicle is locked again within t = 3 s of unlocking it. If the function is requested by intentionally leaving the vehicle, all the lamps are switched off after t = 15 s.
The locator lighting can be switched on and off in the instrument cluster (A1). The status of the locator lighting is provided on the interior CAN by the front SAM control unit.
Additional function requirements for warning and exit illumination
^ Light sensor or rain/light sensor signals darkness
^ Opening a vehicle door
Function sequence for warning and exit illumination
In order to control the warning and exit illumination, the front SAM control unit reads in and evaluates the following signals:
- Light sensor or rain/light sensor status via the wiper/inside rearview mirror LIN
- Status of left front door rotary tumbler switch (A85s1) provided on the interior CAN by the left front door control unit (N69/1)
- Status of right front door rotary tumbler switch (A85/1s1) provided on the interior CAN by the right front door control unit (N69/2)
- Status of the left rear door rotary tumbler switch (A85/3s1) and right rear door rotary tumbler switch (A85/4s1), provided on the interior CAN by the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2)
The front SAM control unit transmits the request to switch on the warning and exit illumination as well as the interior illumination via the interior CAN to the following control units:
- Left front door control unit
- Right front door control unit
- Left rear door control unit (N69/3)
- Right rear door control unit (N69/4)
The following components of the warning and exit illumination are actuated directly according to the door status:
- Left front door exit and warning lamp (E17/3) by the left front door control unit
- Right front door exit and warning lamp (E17/4) by the right front door control unit
- Left rear door exit and warning lamp (E17/5) by the left rear door control unit
- Right rear door exit and warning lamp (E17/6) by the right rear door control unit
The following components of the interior illumination are actuated indirectly through the power supply for the overhead control panel electronics via the front SAM control unit corresponding to the status of the interior lamp automatic function switch (N70/3s3):
- Left front interior lamp
- Right front interior lamp
- Rear interior lamp
Furthermore, the front SAM control unit actuates all footwell lamps at a brightness value of 100 %.
When all vehicle doors have been closed again and the electronic ignition lock control unit provides circuit status circuit 15 On on the interior CAN, the interior lights are switched off.
The footwell lamps are then actuated again at the set brightness value for the symbol illumination.
To preserve the on-board electrical system battery (G1), with circuit 15 Off all the activated lamps are switched off after t = 5 min when a vehicle door is open and t = 8 s after the closing of the last vehicle door.
Additional function requirements for load compartment illumination
^ Trunk lid (model 204.0) or tailgate (model 204.2/9) open
Function sequence for load compartment illumination
In order to control the load compartment illumination, the front SAM control unit reads in and evaluates in the following signal:
- Status of trunk lid rotary tumbler switch (M14/7s1)
(with model 204.0) or tailgate rotary tumbler switch (M14/7s1) (with model 204.2/9), provided by the rear SAM control unit on the interior CAN
The front SAM control unit transmits the request to switch on the load compartment illumination via the interior CAN to the rear SAM control unit, which then actuates the following load compartment illumination components:
- Right trunk lamp (E18/4) (dimmed)
- Left trunk lamp (E18/5) (dimmed) (with model 204.2)
- Trunk lid ambient lamp (E40) (not dimmed) (with model 204.0)
- Left liftgate ambient lamp and warning lamp (E40/2) (not dimmed) (with model 204.2/9)
- Right liftgate ambient lamp and warning lamp (E40/3) (not dimmed) (with model 204.2)
To preserve the on-board electrical system battery, the ambient lamps and the trunk lamps are switched off t = 10 min after the trunk lid or liftgate has been opened.
The status of the front doors is supplied to the rear SAM control unit by the front door control units and the current circuit 15 status is made available on the interior CAN by the electronic ignition lock control unit, so that the load compartment illumination can be activated again at the end of a journey with the trunk lid or liftgate open.
The ambient lamps and the trunk lamps are switched off after the trunk lid or the liftgate is closed.
Additional function requirements for interior illumination with ATA [EDW] alarm
^ ATA [EDW] alarm activated
Function sequence for interior illumination with ATA [EDW] alarm
The rear SAM control unit transmits the "ATA [EDW] alarm triggered" signal via interior CAN to the front SAM control unit.
The following components of the interior illumination are actuated indirectly by the front SAM control unit through the power supply for the overhead control panel electronics:
- Left front interior lamp
- Right front interior lamp
- Rear interior lamp
Furthermore, the front SAM control unit actuates all footwell lamps.
Additional function requirements for interior illumination following an accident with airbag deployment
^ Airbag deployment by the supplemental restraint system control unit (N2/10) or
^ crash detection by the crash sensor integrated into the front SAM control unit
^ Vehicle stationary
Function sequence for interior illumination following an accident with airbag deployment
The interior illumination is actuated in order to provide better orientation for the occupants and the first air personnel following an accident.
The supplemental restraint system control unit transmits the "Crash event" information on the chassis CAN (CAN E). The front SAM control unit receives this and evaluates it.
The overhead control panel electronics are supplied with power via the front SAM control unit. The components for the interior illumination listed below are therefore actuated indirectly by the front SAM control unit:
- Left front interior lamp
- Right front interior lamp
- Rear interior lamp
Furthermore, the front SAM control unit actuates all footwell lamps.
The interior illumination function following an accident with airbag deployment is deactivated under the following conditions:
- Hazard warning flasher switch (S6/1s1) operated
- Unlocking the CL [ZV]
- Change in circuit status from circuit 15R to circuit 15 On
- Opening a vehicle door
