Transfer case (VG), general
A permanent all-wheel drive with three open differentials is used in the model series 251 4x4. The differentials are located in the transfer case, in the front axle transmission and in the rear axle differential.
The torque split of 50:50 % between the front axle and rear axle is specified as a fixed value in the transfer case. The transfer case gear ratio is 1:1.
The permanent all-wheel drive has advantages not only offroad but also on a road which provides good grip. The permanent all-wheel drive enables the driving power to be distributed to all the wheels. This in turn reduces the drive slip (greater traction) and thus increases the tire-to-road adhesion when accelerating. The distributed (lower) driving power enables the wheels to cope with higher lateral stability.
4x2-vehicles
An adapter housing is fitted instead of the transfer case on vehicles with rear wheel drive (4x2). A through-propeller shaft which does not realize any form of transmission ratio is located inside.
The propeller shaft can be fitted to the rear axle of the 4x4 vehicles by using the adapter housing.
